just a little engine problem

Hey everybody. I am looking for the engine spec sticker information for a 1969 chev with 4bbl and auto. I need to know also if the vacuum line from the distributor needs to be plugged or not. This engine also has HEI just to make it more difficult. I have tried timing it with the vacuum line plugged and set it at 8 BTDC and after plugging in the line again the mark is not on the tab anymore. As a guess I would say that it is somewhere around 26-32 BTDC. What gives? Just a little frustrated. Also I just installed an Edelbrock 1406. Thanks.

8* is right with the vacuum plugged. When you plugged it in you were in the manifold side of the carb(driver side). If you have 20" of vacuum at idle it will jump to about 20*-25* as you step on the gas the vacuum drops and your timing drops. If you plug it in the ported side(passenger side) there is no vacuum at idle on this port and your timing will stay the same. Think of vacuum advance really as vacuum retard meaning when you get under load the vacuum drops timing backs down and everything is good, when you are cruising the vacuum is high and your timing is the most for good economy and a clean burn. I know there was a thread on this hook up a week or so ago but I don't have it marked.

After a test drive I am still not thrilled with the way it runs. It lugs when you step on the gas after a stop. It also lugs a little when driving. It shows up worst when in reverse seems like it has almost no power unless you really step on it.

Did you adjust the idle mixture screws after you put the carb in? Are you running to rich, Black smoke off the tail pipes. You might have a stuck float and getting to much gas. Is this a small block or a big block, Should matter just curious.

I tried the idle mixture screws and it did seem to run a little rich. The idle changes every time I start this truck up. It never stays the same.

The idle should not change unless your choke is not setup. Did you run the choke directly to Ignition power? I expected others to chime in with ideas. If I can't help you anymore than check the carb to see if fuel is flooding into the carb, you should repost under the engine drive train section you might get more help there as I am running out of ideas.

Fixed it! BTW carb is a manual choke so no help on the elec. part. Not flooding either. Plug wires and a little idle mixture adjustment was all it took. The plug wires that were on the truck when I bought it were angle boots and you can imagine how that turned out. 2 burned wires and another almost there. After I changed the wires I had to adjust out a little hiccup it had but all is well. Thanks for your input dwaite72lnghrn much appreciated.
