Temp gauge went crazy..
I was driving the 93 chevy yesterday and I looked at the temp gague and it was going nuts.. bouncing all over the place.. It wasn't a smooth bounce, this thing was jumping so hard back and forth I swear the thing was going to break.. It even pegged itself a couple times.. The truck wasn't boiling over when I pulled over.. Seemed fine.. So I'm thinking it's an electical problem..
Next to the T stat under the hood there's a sensor on the top of the engine and from the same wiring harness there's 2 wires that don't go to anything.. Can someone snap a pic of their engine so I can find out where the wires go... Thanx all..

DID YOU CHANGE ANYTHING IN YOUR COOLING SYSTEM LATELY? MY 97 SILVERADO DID THAT AFTER I CHANGED THE WATER PUMP. IT WAS A BUNCH OF AIR BUBBLES IN THE MOTOR AND COOLING SYSTEM. THEY EVENTUALLY WORKED THEMSELVES OUT. IM NOT SURE IF THAT HELPS YOU AT ALL BUT HEY, GOOD LUCK!

I'll check those wires when I get home... but the one that goes to the guage is the one on the side of the block (passenger's side, I think). The one by the t-stat goes to the computer.

haven't changed anything at all.. about a month ago the truck started to get hot one day. was 100+ and I was sitting in traffic with the AC on.. saw it started to rise and turned off the AC.. it didn't get super hot. Other then that it's been fine..

Damn it, I totally forgot to check those wires! I better write myself a note...
If the guage is going nuts and truck seems fine, it is probably that sending unit.

Its probably the guage, the resistor(white block) on the back of the guage will become loose or corroded and the meter will peg to the right.
Remove the guage and remove the resistor and clean all surfaces carefully with a pencil eraser. Re-install resistor and guage. This is how the older model(86) guages work, probably the same in 93. Hope this helps.

I'll say the sensor itself. I have a 350 block truck and the gauge did exactly the same. It would run normally for a few minutes, then pin to the top, then wander down, then pin again. Eventually it stopped working all together. Now I have a new sensor, but I think the jobber gave me the wrong one. This one indicates about 125C when the temp on the block is only 80C. But it does work evenly though....

It hasn't done it since then.. It wasn't a smooth rise or fall.. It was jerky.
Let me go outside and see if I can get a pic of the wire I'm talkin about..

from what I can make of it , it appears to be the same as the ground wires(thero housing) only the ring is broken off. I have a 93 and there are 4 sets of grd wires at the housing.

looks like a broken ring.. I guess it's just a ground wire... Hasn't been a problem since that one day... Weird.. Guess I'll go get a ring and bolt that thing back down.
