Need opinions...
Hey all you 67-72 guys!
I was driving home the other night and spotted a truck sittin on the side of the road, looked decent from the highway, so I stopped in today to take a closer look... Ends up its a 1970 Chevy Longhorn C20, has rot in all the typical places, but has a brand new front end (basically all of the suspension has been rebuilt / replaced) all new tires, new exhaust, 14 bolt rear with drums all around. The motor needs to be rebuilt / replaced (blown head gasket, and bad rings) has a TH350 He is asking 2500, but I said I wouldn't pay more than 2000, he figured that his brother probally wouldn't accept... What do you guys think? Good deal, bad deal?

I dunno about up in the cold country, but that sounds pretty high (even in Canadian dollars) for what I would classify as a non-running/motorless truck. Even with the front end, that's a big chunk of cash to start with that level of truck.

Pics are here...
Do remember this is Northern Alberta -- These trucks are a rare sight on the side of the road not to mention on the road This one is more solid than most of the 73-87s I've looked at, lol I'm not gonna buy it if I can't get my price, I just wanna figure out what that price is first. If it doesn't go through, then I'll just put this cash into my 80 GMC

I think it depends what you mean by "rot in all the typical places". If the rot is limited to the rockers/cab corners I could see pushing $2K Canadian especially with a new front end/tires in the deal. If the rot extends much into the cab floor/bed/fenders or the roof has some rot then I'd say ALOT less. What kind of shape is the paint in otherwise? Much surface rust? Dents? Interior condition? Tranny OK?

It starts and drives, interior is rough, and I couldn't find a single dent anywhere on the thing...
I'm thinking I won't pay more than 1500 for this, if even... I'll see what I can work him down to, if it doesn't work, oh well...

I just saw the pictures. Too bad it's been painted. Then you could really see what's going on with the body. Around here that'd be a $500-$700 dollar truck.

if it runs and drives, i would pay that...but that is CDN. i think Longhorns are cooler than regular longbeds, but i suppose i am in the minority here. i would just look for rust over the top of the windshield. if it is rusted through, then you will be needing a new cab. what engine? i'm guessing 350 but i dont think you said for sure. running and driving? i would pay $2k canadian, of course if the rust is really bad then no thanx.

it starts and drives, but makes white smoke -- Which tells me it has a bad head gasket, and when it cranks, the motor doesn't crank evenly, which tells me that it has poor compression in some cylinders, its a 350 BTW. The windsheild didn't appear to have any rust around it... But yeah 2k cnd (about 1400 usd) is still too much.

i think homie needs to stop sniffing in the morning moose dung. unless you are really wanting a longhorn i can't see anyone spending more then couple hundred US dallors. Bad motor, rust on almost every panel, some UFO repellent thing on the hood(ET fanatic?).
It is a longhorn and yes it is 10 X better then a regular longbed. But you got to think about what needs to be done to get it to just be a daily and think what it's going to take to make it a nice truck. |

To be a daily? A weekend of swapping a motor in, lol
As far as making it a nice truck -- Thats a bit more indepth, lol -- I'm thinkin I'll just keep working on my 80 and keep my eyes open for other opportunities

I guess I'm in the minority here...I would maybe pay $1500 (CDN) for it, BUT that is if the frame is solid and doesn't have any Roof rot as mentioned before. Does look as tho it has a very nice original Grille tho....

The frame looks as good as the frame on my GMC, and it doesn't appear to have any serious roof rot...

This one's a #5, and as such is worth about 500.00-700.00 USD at best. Please see below...
Condition Guidelines -------------------------------------------------------------------- #1 Excellent: A close to perfect original or a very well restored vehicle. Generally a body-off restoration, but a well done body-on restoration that has been fully detailed may qualify. The vehicle is stunning to look at and any flaws are trivial and not readily apparent. Everything works as new. All equipment is original, NOS, or excellent quality reproductions. Note: This is NOT a 100 point trailered show car. See show car description in How to Use section. #2 Very Good: An extremely presentable vehicle showing minimal wear, or a well restored vehicle. Runs and drives smooth and tight. Needs no mechanical or cosmetic work. All areas (chassis not required, but may be) have been fully detailed. Beautiful to look at but clearly below a #1 vehicle. #3 Good: Presentable inside and out with some signs of wear. Not detailed but very clean. Body should be straight and solid with no apparent rust and absolutely no rust-through anywhere. Shiny, attractive paint but may have evidence of minor fading or checking or other imperfections. Runs and drives well. May need some minor mechanical or cosmetic work but is fully usable and enjoyable as is. #4 Fair: runs and drives OK but needs work throughout the vehicle. Body shows signs of wear or previous restoration work. Any rust should be minimal and not in any structural areas. Cosmetics, body, and mechanics all need work to some degree. #5 Poor: In need of complete restoration, but is complete and not a rust bucket beyond repair. May or may not run and drive. Not roadworthy. Parts or Salvage: Incomplete vehicle most useful for parts. Generally, take 40-50% of the #5 value

Russell, bottom line is how bad do you want the truck and are you just wanting a regluar truck or a Longhorn? You know the situation of trucks in your area and how hard/easy they are to come by.I see a lot of 68=72 trucks here but not to many 67's.
I wanted a 67. So when I came across one I liked I bought it. $2,000 ( delivered ) Sounds like you have been putting some thought into the price of the truck. Would you be kicking yourself if you pass it up? Or if you later feel you paid to much? Set a price in your mind you feel ok with. Try and get it at that price and if not I would set that money aside and keep adding to it so that when I did come across something I wanted I would have the funds. allows for something better. For me it does have a bit more rust then I feel comfortable with. I stay away from trucks that have been repainted as well as I like to know what's going on with the body underneath.

I wouldnt give any more than $1,000 for it. You should wait and look elsewhere for something more mech. sound. You would be looking to rebuild or replace the engine.you can find a better deal out there. $2,000 would buy you that same truck here with a good running engine and a little less work.
