Need some help with water pumps?

I finally got my new goodwrench 350 into my 72 Jimmy and all was going pretty well until I ran into several problems, one of which was the new water pump I bought is shorter than my last one, I know this because the alt bracket does not line up. It looks like it might work with some sort of spacer but that doesn't seem like a good idea. what water pump do i need to make this work?

Oh and I might as well ask another question...I had two older distributors that were the points style I believe, and I decided to order a HEI off of ebay, said SBC... I get it and the thing is HUGE, the cap is much bigger and it also seems to be longer...what gives?

OK there are 2 different water pumps, the short one (6") and the long (9"). My truck has a 9" pump because the engine is from an 82, so I'm not sure what the factory size is for the 67-72 V8 engine.
The distributor will be large if it's a factory HEI. Not sure on the length tho, I thought they were all the same length.

HEI distributor cap is much larger and cap is taller than points style (coil is in the cap).

Here are pics of short and long pumps. Originally the 67-72's had short pump with alternator on drivers side. 73 up trucks use long pump with alternator on passenger side. Sounds like your truck may have later eng.

Long or short pumps - problem?

Thanks, John - Great diagram.

It got me wondering tho - the '84 small-block we're putting in the '69 C10 2WD has the long pump. We pulled the 250 I6 and now have the V8 sitting in the factory position on factory towers/mounts. A couple of years ago, I put a V8 radiator in since I knew the swap was coming, but we haven't gotten around to putting that back in with the fan, etc. The fan I have came with the V8, but from a passenger car.

Does anyone know if the V8 with the long pump crowds the radiator on these trucks?

Just wondering if I'm headed for another problem. I'd also like to know if I need to get a fan shroud specifically for this year truck, or will a later (salvage yard) shroud work?

Pics coming soon. The long block is in the freshly painted engine compartment, really looking sharp.

stickshift or walk there is no problem with rad. clearance, but the fan sticks into the shroud quite a ways. What I did was cut an inch off of the shroud. or a big block fits with no mods. John

Shrouds?

TTT...Thanks for the quick pic, John. Sharp engine, too!

What about shrouds? Only 67-72? Will other years work? All I've got is the goofy little shield that came with the I6, and everyone seems to agree (as do I) that they're really important.

Thanks...SSOW

Thanks, I do have a long water pump, and the bracket is also from a long water pump engine...the problem is not with the shaft lengths but in the alternator mounting bracket...I can take a picutre of both of them if this helps.

Thanks again

In the average situation the alt mounts to the driver side with a short water pump. The alt mounts to the pass side with a long water pump. I have read (on the board) that there are some some small variations... and hopefully someone can answer that soon. You might want to take those pics.

I'm glad to see that diagram was helpful to others ...( If it's the one I made, and I'm not sayin' it is... I got it off the Alan Grove web site) :p

Yes, my alt mounts on the passenger side, and after looking at that diagram I am sure that mine is a long one.

We've read on before that shrouds off of Chevy vans will fit, too.

Is it the upper Alt bracket that doesn't fit? There are two different kinds of upper brackets for the long water pump. I have a brand new chome one that didn't work on mine, then I decided to go with the short pump to solve another problem.
