I finally received my tilt column!

It came today, the 4-speed tilt column arrived at my doorstep!

Despite what transpired between the seller and I, this guy does do amazing work, and I am a happy camper. Everything looks perfect, I can't wait to install it in Yeller.

Here are a few pics. By the way, what does that lever do? (in the second pic)

Is that a column shifter arm?

Does look nice. Did you and the guy make up and kiss?

I think you have to push that lever down to remove the key, If so that might be a column out of a jeep. I believe they have a lever like that and are very similar to truck columns.

It is some kind of lever with a spring activated reverse. Not sure what it does since my '73 column doesn't have one.

We didn't kiss and make up, but he was understanding of my irritation and dis pleasure. Everything is good between us, he seems like a professional.

You have to mash that lever down to turn the key to the off position. Kind of like you have to put an automatic in park before being able to turn the key to the off position. My 86 3/4 ton silverado crew cab has it! I hope that helps!

I don't know about that, this column looks identical to my '73 with the exception of the lever in question, and the end where the intermediate shaft connects. He said that GM changed the ends and intermediate shafts throughout the years (along with the wiring plugs), he said as long as you have the matching set it will bolt in just fine.

Edited above post! Bagged 74 beat me to the answer! I'm not sure when this was started. All I know, is it is in my 86. How much is a used tilt column for a standard shift (one like pictured at top of post) worth? I will probably be doing a swap for an auto!

my wifes dad has that lever on his 88 gmc heavy half and it annoying. u press it down the be able to get the key to off and out. its the same as a ford ranger cept theres is mounted on the top of the column

My '83 C10 has that lever and its for key removal like stated above.
My truck has the factory no tilt, manual on the floor column.
I like the lever location, some different vehicles, like my gf's old mustang required two hands, one to push the lever the other to turn the key.
You get so used to the lever its like its not even there, your middle finger flicks it as you turn the key..... you forget your even doing it.

My tilt column from steeringcolumnologist arrived on Monday 6/28, and I am also pleased with the results. Great workmanship and it was worth the wait!

I originally bought a used automatic tilt column on ebay. After some e-mails with steeringcolumnologist, he had the parts & knowledge to convert my column shift unit to a floor shift style. The shift bowl would not be "correct" for my '76, but would look right. I am very satisfied with the results!

I have $218 in this rebuilt & converted column, which includes the original ebay deal, the rebuild and conversion parts, and all shipping.

Steeringcolumnologist had some computer issues and shop equipment failures while working on my column (and Jeff's), so the turnaround time was significantly longer than usual. I think he is great guy that does excellent work. I recommend him!

Lever...who needs a lever. I can pull my key out at anytime...even when the truck is still running! Levers....I don't need no stinkin levers!

I think the push lever started in 79.

Is that going in a 73? If so you will need the later non-splined intermediate shaft. Your 73 will have the splined. I think that colunm is from a 79-83 truck.

If that is addressed to me...I have the matching intermediate shaft too, and you are correct, 79-83 (that is what I was told).

If you can pull your key out while its on, start, or running your key may have wear.
I have a set of copied keys I used for ever and after awhile they would pull right out. When I tried the factory keys again they wouldnt pull out. I had new copies made of the factory keys and the new copies wouldnt pull out. Might want to make some copies before your keys get too bad.

You can also buy some key lubricant (graphite) to put on the key and insert into the keyhole a few times to lube it. This helps the key in and out and helps both the key and lock mech. last longer. You dont need very much of this lubricant at all, just a little bit. You should reapply once a year. Works great for outside doors (home and auto).

My 91 Suburban does not have that stupid key release lever. So I don't know when they quit that feature.

Only the 4 speed trucks had that key release lever on the column.
