Best Magazine for '69-'72's ?

I'd like to hear ya'll's opinions on the magazine(s) that give the best coverage of our trucks.

The coverage on this board is really great, but I don't have a computer in the "reading room" yet...

Thanks...SSOW

Custom Classic Trucks is about the best that I'm aware of.

I used to get Chevy Truck (I think thats all it was called) but I think they quit or something (can't remeber). That was a good mag though (there were 67-72 stuff in it all the time.

I like Classic Trucks a little more than Custom Classic Trucks, but they are both good mags covering many 67-72's plus other trucks that should incite new ideas

I have a subscription to Classic and Custom Classic Trucks. Both always have good coverage but I like Custom Classic better!

They're all lame to me.

I want to see some nuts and bolts. Most of the cool trucks that are featured don't have any pertinant information in the text. The whole article will go on about how his grandad found the truck and passed it down through the generations and Joe Bob drove it through high school...blah, blah, blah.

I want to see how he modified that bumper to fit, or that later model brake booster to fit, or those type of things. I buy the magazine for the trucks, not the human intrest articles.

Tech Mags - Endangered Species

Tx - Excellent point, and exactly what I was afraid of. Yeah, it will be good to see finished products for ideas of what to do (or not do), but I'm like you - I want to know more about how it was done and how well it works than how many coats of paint or previous owners it has.

My theory? An overabundance of lawyers. The more how-to articles the mags write, the more exposed they are to some nitwit doing it the wrong way to the point of damage or injury - then hooking up with a shyster to sue the pants off of someone to pay for the nitwit's stupidity.

I've subscribed to HR, PHR, 4WLR, 4WOR, and various others for many years, and I've seen a steady decline in the tech content of these publications, and I don't believe its all because the audience has changed their tastes. When the magazines now do a how-to, all they do is hire a custom shop to do the work and take pictures. Guess the shops have liablility insurance anyway.

I guess, in a way, you could consider this board a replacement for that magazine content, or perhaps an evolution of it enabled by internet technology. Who would have guessed 20 years ago that thousands of shade-tree mechanics would be swapping ideas, advice, and pictures whilst separated by thousands of miles?

Oh well, off the soapbox. I'll pick one (for the pictures) based on the above advice and stick with this board for how-to advice.

Thanks for the responses, and keep the shiny side up...SSOW

I think Classic Truck is a little better myself. Custom Classic seems like they reprint alot of stuff I see in other magazines. Has anyone seen the new webrodder.com webpage? Lots of great how-to articles on there.

In my opinion way more classic trucks than custom classic trucks. I agree about the tech articles. The only mag that I have seen that does a good job is Street Rod Builder. It has step by step processes usually with color pics for each. It is a bit more expensive than the rest but by far the best auto mag I have ever bought.

Maybe they spent many hours (and/or dollars) on their unique modifications and don't just want to tell everyone their secrets? There are things that I've done to my truck that I've kept "secret" because I don't want everyone to copy off of it. I personally don't expect that kind of information to be given in a feature truck article.

I subscribe to Classic Trucks and am overall pleased with it.

That's funny you say it like that. There have been times over the last year, that you and I have talked via PM and you've answered every question about your truck that I've asked. You never seemed to hold back your secrets to anybody here on the board.

Like was said above, the internet is the only place I can get my tech article kicks.

I go to a hot rod board that is nothing but hundreds of new hard core tech posts every day. Stuff like gas welding patch panels, or building you own frames. Every since I found that site, I haven't wanted many magazines.

By the way, the best car magazine in the world is The Rodder's Journal. The 12 dollar cover price scares folks off though. It's a shame, because I'd pay twice that for the magazine, it's that good.

Classic Trucks seems to favor the 67-72's, more than Custom Classic Trucks. Truck Builder has a series going on a '67-72, also. Lots of color pix in Truck Builder.

Chevy Truck magazine was a Petersen publication, like Custom Classic Trucks was. At some time, I'm betting that one of them will merge with the other and we'll have Classic Custom Classic Truck magazine. Sport Truck and Truckin' both have features from time to time for our trucks.

Since I can't always have a computer in my truck, I have to refer to the magazines, but this message board format is the the best one I know of for our 67-72's.

Get Classic and Custom Classic, like Classic better. But for overall tech Chevy Hi- Po, Car Craft and Chevy Rumble. Doug Marion and Jeff Smith are great with their stories.

Try Truck Builder. I have only found last months here in Phoenix. I think it is just starting its publication and is not everywhere yet. I saw it in the book store and it had an article on a rebuild of a GM 12 bolt, just had to get it. It seems pretty good on the tech articles, but then again I have only read this one edition. I will probably buy it next month just to see.
