New BBC 396 (408)

Here is how I spent my Saturday. My neighbor and I put this beauty together. The 396 came out of 68 GMC and was still standard. The machinist thought that we were kidding when we said punch it .060". It has forged pistons, ARP everwhere, Edelbrock heads, Airgap intake, and shiny stuff everywhere. I can't wait to see it in the truck! Of course, one pic is before and one is after.

How come you took a standard block and bored it .060" over?

Hey, is that the factory 1968, GMC on/off switch?

Sorry. Couldn't resist. I still had Photoshop open when I saw this post.

The engine looks great. The ONLY reason I went with a 383 on my project verses a big-block is that with the 383 I don't have to engineer anything (GM never made a 4x4 big block until after '72).

This one is not going into a 4x4. It is going into a 72 C10. I wondered if someone would comment on the switch. I bought this camper in Canada and it came complete with the switch

Hey Breeh, I noticed the aluminum timing cover and wondered if it was running a chain or gear drive? Have you heard of any problems running a gear drive under an aluminum cover? Also, I think that Moroso offers chrome head bolts (smoothy style outside, allen wrench inner) if he wants to add more shine to those beautiful heads!!!

PONT, there is a double roller chain under the cover. I am not sure about your gear drive question. I have not heard that before but I have never used a gear drive either. Thanks for the info on the bolts. I know that he was not happy about putting the black bolts on the polished aluminum. I will pass the info on to him.

I don't think I've ever seen a BB PS resevoir mounted like that. The others I've seen have been mounted closer to the fender. Is that the earlier way of mounting them?

Is that a one piece oil pan gasket with that pan? How much was that pan and the part # if it is not too much trouble?

Man, I'm all for displacement. But punching a virgin block .060 over!!!! What happens if for some freak reason you burn a piston or some other freak of nature happens. No room for error. Not to mention the weaker cylinder walls. & for only a few more inches.

72superBB, I didn't buy the parts, I just put them together. It was not a one piece seal though. Most of the parts came from Summit so you should be able to find one there.

graywOlf, if you don't like the .060 396, think of it as a .030 402! There is plenty of meat in those cylinder walls still. In the old days they would sometimes punch a 396 all the way out to a 427 bore. If one cylinder goes it is a done deal anyways as the entire reciprocating assembly has been balanced.
