Wrecked 95 w/ 148000, buy it?
A guy I work with total a 95 1/2 ton silverado extended cab 2wd last friday and has an option to buy it back for $1500. I found another 88 less motor and tranny for $300. I wanted to but back the truck from him and fix it. I go to school for auto collision repair and soon will be working in a shop. I think the project would also be good to add to my resume. Anyway, I was all gun ho, looked at the truck today, grill and headlights, hood, right fender, radiator support, tire, and bumper. Could scronge everything off the 88, part it out, and use that money for the correct grill, lights, and paint. The only big thing is the frame horn needs to be straightened with a BFH cause one bumper support bent it a little. The only smart thing GM did on these trucks was box the front frame so they have to hit pretty hard to really screw them up. It wasn't even bad enough to set off the air bags. I really like this truck, and miss my old 92 extended cab that I sold years ago because I was stupid, but the kicker is the odometer reads 148xxx. I know my grandma drives harder and faster than this guy, but still that is alot of miles. How do these vortech motors hold up, I am a carburater man, and owned two fuel injected chevy. One was a 92 4.3 with half those miles and never had a problem with it, but the other was a well aged 350 that was a nightmare. I hate the TBI setups and frown apon chevy for this technology. But did they fix there trucks with the direct FI these trucks have? Will I have another basket case in a couple thousand miles? I think will get the truck anyways to turn around and resell, or should I keep it? I don't have enough projects now, frame off resto/mod on the 69, crossover and may be clocking the transfer case on the 85, and un wrecking the 95, what have I gotten myself into?
