The open road race in Nevada is called the Silver State Classic. It's held in the early fall. It is 100 miles from Hiko to Lund. I can't remember the state highway number but have driven it ( not in the race) and the road is / was in excellent shape the last time drove it. Me and a friend went in the early 90's. The fastest car was a 69 Camaro driven by a 19 year old kid. He did the 100 miles in about 27 minutes! Some people in a Ferrari also died from a blowout. The tech inspection is incredibly difficult. You may want to get some info on what you would need to do so you could enter. I used to have a cool video of the race but loaned it out and never saw it again....You can get away with road racing on your own in Nevada. Last month, I drove from Las Vegas to Carson City (486 miles) in 5 hours 26 minutes in a 2003 Chevy 2500HD. Not alot of cops in the middle of nowhere. It averages out to 88 mph....Good luck with the race.

I was there and saw it happen!!!!! All I remember about the car was that it had an all aluminum Donovan Big Block. They called the car Big Red.

Just something on my todo list, I watched it on the speed channel I think, and it looked like it would be a blast, I was looking up the rules and that, and they do look pretty tough on the mechanical portion of it all, figured by next june/july should have my truck mechanically sound, but that is another topic all together,

There are also the Pony Express races. One in Elko,NV and the other is in Battle Mountain. Seen 3 in Battle Mtn while I lived there. There are some very high dollar cars that show up. A lot of different cars/trucks come for it, they run against the clock one at a time. All you really see of the race is the start or the finish as a spectator though. Unless you go out early before they close the hwy, then you just see them fly by one at a time. They run anything from 4cyl vw's to semi tractors that just dropped their trailer at the truck stop. The last race I saw an old formula 1 car won, the local paper claimed he averaged 247mph, I forget the time though. The races are more for teams and drivers, than spectators.

I remember reading the article in Hot Rod I think. The Camero has a 540 ci BB in it . One of the editors got to ride in it then he wrote about his experience . It was such a cool article .

Ok, I was wrong, it was 90 miles instead of the 100 I mentioned earlier. Looks like the organization that puts the race on has it much more together than when I went to the race. I think it was 1991. Me and my buddy hung out at the starting line. Gearing was so low (numerically) that some of the cars would barely move off the starting line when they got going. The closest motels are in Ely. Don't expect anything fancy. The town is old and run down. I have lived in Nevada for almost 20 years and here are a few of the best highways I have found for high speed uninterupted driving : Hiway 6 out of Ely. The road is in excellent shape with good hard shoulders and long stretches of straight road. Some stretches are nice and flat going for 10 miles without even as much as a dip in the road. Hiway 375 is my all time favorite. It runs between Rachel ( close to area 51) and Tonapah. It's rare to see another vehicle on this road. Most of the time you can use the whole road. Start to watch your speed about 30 outside of Tonapah. I have never seen a cop on Hiway 375 but have seen alot of them on Hiway 95 which it connects to. Tonapah survives on income from speeders. Last time I passed through there, I saw a motorcycle cop. It kind of surprised me, it's a hokey little town that probably only has one cop. Goldfield, which is just south of Tonapah, used to have a decoy cop car with a mannequin sitting in it. Last time I drove through there, someone had torched it. Last time I drove Hiway 375, it was in an 02 Camaro with an LS-1 and a 6 speed. Drove it at 140+ for quite a while and it was a blast. Also had a white 76 Vette that scared the crap out of me. The back end got really light at 130 at felt like it was going to flip around. Lots of middle of no-where out here. If anyone else knows of other good road racing stretches of hiways in rural nevada, post it..

Race weight was 45/55 front/rear @ the start of the race (w/a 40gal fuel-safe fuel cell) & was designed so that as fuel was used along the track & the tires got 'sticky-er', the car would be @ an ideal 50/50 weight distribution through the turns. Avg speed back in the 88 race (when it set the record) was 199.XX w/a top speed of 220+mph. It was retired years ago & has been in a Nevada casino/hotel/museum on display. But recently, (spring '04) it has been pulled from hibernation by the father/son team (Dan & R.J. Gottlieb) to 'dominate' once again. It's one bad muther f**king ride. In some gear head circles, that car is considered 'holy'.

Big Red Camaro
Gonebad2/Scoti... I remember that camaro...It had a big spread in one of the HotRod magazines. It ran a dry sump in the trunk of something like 15 qrt capacity and was caged with a grab handle for the passenger! It also had a full skid plate underpan to protect from "dips" in the road. It had some cool "ISCA" type rims on it with white rally stripes on the red paint. The driver was the son who also was a redhead! I think I have the pic in my garage somewhere. I'll try to find it if the rats haven't taken it.
Here is a link with the coverage.... http://www.racehome.com/piclink.htm http://www.racehome.com/images/camaros/gottcc1-sm.jpg http://www.racehome.com/images/camar...tliebpage1.jpg Last edited by Rdrdave; 07-08-2004 at 12:42 PM. Reason: updating info |

Nevada's open roads are all too soon becoming busy. I had my Favorite one outside Vegas to run My Mitsubishi 3000 GT on. You never seen another car or Cop. My favorite was from Pahrump to Death Valley Junction, Up through Amargosa Valley to Hwy 95, down 95 ( the only road you have a chance to see a cop on) then down Hwy 160 back to Pahrump.. It was a very fun 2:00 AM run... Nothing but Sidewinders and ME..... THEN,,,, they built another danged Casino on my road out in the middle of No-Where.. Right in the Middle of My "Midnight Run" Tonopah is where the Stealth fighter was developed and tested.... Tonopah, Now has a "SLICK TOP" NHP PICKUP... Seen it last time I went through a few months ago, I was told he likes to Patrol HWY 95 south... That long hill is easy to allow the car/truck to get away from you. |
