muffler confusion

I want to put new exhaust on my truck but dont know what kind of muffler to get. I was told by local bender that the Magnaflows sound like a muscle car from the 60's. not sure if I like the sound of Flowmasters. what I want is a mellow sound @ idle but opens up & barks when under hard acceleration. also needs to be liveable on highway. dont want resonation in cab. honestly I am leaning more towards the round Magnaflows as they will take up the least amount of room & are stainless. they also come with a lifetime warranty which is good since I will own truck for about another 20 years. has anyone else used these? what do you think of sound-resonance?

BTW I am going with Heddman headers & a 2 1/2 pipes out the side behind tires & have air bagged coil sprung type rear

Magnaflows have a more mellow tone than Flows, but still sound very good. The next set I buy will be the round Magnas as well.

I went with a single dual-in dual-out (oval) MagnaFlow on my '02 GMC3500 (6.0L) because I liked their sound better than the Flowmasters when I checked out other trucks with similar setups. I'm really happy with the sound around town, and have gotten several compliments.

Trouble is, the resonance at 70mph is annoying. Not deafening, and can be defeated with a decent stereo, but not what I would go with again.

For my money, you can't beat glasspacks. I had dual 12 inchers on 2" pipe on my '87 R10 305/4spd that was much quieter at cruise than the MagnaFlow, at least INSIDE the cab. Match the length and diameter for the sound you want, loud or quiet. IMO, the sound of a small (or big) block Chevy on glasspacks is as classic and American as things like apple pie, baseball, and Harleys with straight pipes. It's a freedom thing.

So anything without the @#$% OBD-II sensor, for me, gets the glasspacks. The manufacturers and shops tell me that glasspacks don't have enough back pressure to keep the rear sensor happy, resulting in frequent check-engine lights.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it...SSOW

A friend of mine had dual glasspacks on his 2002 2500HD for almost 30,000 miles with no problems with the check engine light before he sold it. It sounded awesome! Check the link to my site for a sound clip of it. One thing he did though was reduce the 3" pipes down to 2.5" before the glasspacks, so maybe the reduced size helped with backpressure.

I have Flowmaster 40's on my 72 SWB, and I have Magnaflows on my Dodge Ram. For my 72 i chose the flowmasters because i wanted a real agressive sound that was always loud even at idle. For my Dodge i chose the Magnaflows because i wanted something really bad A$$ when i Got on it, but mellow at idle so i could still hear people talking.... It sounds good on it too, the idle is really deep and throaty, and when you get on it people turn around... Just depends on what you want!

Is there a catalytic converter on the truck it will make a big biffrance in the way they sound and how loud they are. A 72 with flow masters 40 series and no catalytic converter will be twice as loud as 98 with a catalytic converter. I have 40 on my 69 with a 396 with headers and it is loud REALLY loud.

On the older trucks, the dynomax Superturbo's are hard to beat for price on a good flowing muffler. These muffs will be pretty tame, on a stocker out the back. I run 2 1/2" pipe, H pipe, Superturbo's(14" body). the tailpipes are turned out the sides, ahead of the rear tires.....pretty quiet @ idle. but that 383 barks when she is opened up! Add as set of 3 1/2 x 16 or 18" chrome or stainless cans on the back, & that will deepen the sound! you should have heard that system with a warmed up 461" Olds.....the more power they make, the louder it gets crazyL

72C10step, did that '02 2500HD have downstream post cat sensor. my guess is not. many of the heavier trucks had looser emissions regulations & still do. that is part of the reason for the higher price. kind of a way for the EPA to say "take that".
from what you guys are saying the magnas are just what I am looking for. would like to hear a sound clip though.

I talked to an exhaust shop this morning & they said if I am not happy with the sound he will replace for no charge. what a nice guy. maybe it helped that I brought the donuts for breakfast.

I'm not sure, he hasn't had that truck for almost a year and a half now, but you're probably right, it probably didn't have one.
