Exhaust Question
I have a very pungent exhaust type smell in my Jimmy. I had the exhaust system checked out and a couple of problems fixed but there's still a pretty bad smell (like exhaust). I know the carb leaks a little bit and am going to change it out. What else should I check? What could cause this?

Where does your exhaust exit? You may be getting a back draft.

Make sure the weatherstrips on your liftgate/tailgate are good. My exhaust was exiting 12 inches behind the cab and was coming in through the back glass (slider). Have someone check for hot air coming in while you drive it down the road.

You said Pungent, but I think Acrid may be a better term.
Before I changed my carb, and later my distributor, being around my exhaust gas would bring tears to your eyes....and they weren't happy tears. When I bought my truck, it had an Edelbrock 1405...jetted for performance. Mileage was terrible and the truck ran rich...which caused the acrid, eye-burning odor. So, I changed to an Edlebrock 1901 (Q-jet). The engine ran so much leaner and hotter that I had to put a heat shield on the starter solenoid. This one item got rid of that eye-watering smell. I had also had a problem with plugs that became gas-fouled. It was better with the new carb but changing the HEI out ,for an Accel reman unit, really stopped the problem with the plugs. But, I think your carb is running too rich, and that is why you complained.
