What does this do?
This was attached to the end of my old speedo cable. It mounts between the trans and cable itself. What does it do? It was formally attached to the th350 trans that was in my '73.
I purchased a new cable in order to install my Autometer speedometer, do I need to use this or simply screw my new cable to the transmission? Thanks for the help.

I think that has something to do with adjusting the speedo cable ratio...
My SM465 has one just like it attached to it...

I'm not exactly sure what that is. But to answer your question, no, you don't use this part with a 700R4 and the Autometer speedo.

it changes the speed of the speedo input cable so your speedometer reads accurate... turn the input of it exact one turn and the output will be slightly different

To expand a little...
I don't know why GM didn't just put the right gears in the tranny for the speedo, but three of my six trucks (at least, I don't know that I've looked at them all...) had these factory. They are just two gears in a case to change the speed of the speedo cable compared to the gear in the adapter installed in the transmission. GM offers enough drive and driven gears to be installed on the transmission output shaft and in the cable adapter to eliminate these external gear boxes, which is what I have been systematically doing on my trucks... - I do understand that Jeff is going to an electronic speedo and this is all unnecessary for him...
