What Axle do I have?
Greetings all,
I am going to regear my rearend in my '69 chev C-20 and need to know what axle I have. It is the one with the center pumpkin that drops out the front when you remove the axleshafts. I think it currently has a 5.13 gear ratio in it and I want to go with a 3.23ish gearing. Thanks in advance. Ogier |

yep that's what's called the eaton/corperate axle also known as H052 (3/4) or H072 (1 ton) rear. It was replaced by the 14 bolt full float axle in 1973. The best(highest) gear ratio you'll find will be 4.10s. 3.90s were supposedly available from the aftermarket. Do a search on H052 or H072.

Ok, Now that I have the axle positively identified as an Eaton. I would like to swap in a 12-14bolt 3/4T axle in it's place. What vehicles should I look for this under. I don't want to have to cut and weld on mounting hardware. I want a direct bolt in.
I believe that I will have to shorten the driveline a bit to do this swap and am prepared to do so. Thanks again in advance, Ogier |

Whether or not you keep the rear that you have, here's some info from my '69 Truck Data book (dealer item). The stock gears for your truck should be 4.10's. That's the standard ratio with any engine except the 250 6-cyl. There's a 4.57 available, but only with the 250. Look for Option number H20 or HB8.

I would like to get down to about 3.30ish I think. So, I believe that I need a 12-14bolt 3/4 tonne axle to do this rather than the eaton.
Thanks Ogier |

5.14 were an option with the Eaton axle. IIRC, the 14 bolt can only go down to 3.73, but the dana 70 (similar to the Eaton and 14b) can go down to 3.07. Or, you could always swap in lighter axles, like the 12 bolt.

A 12-bolt would probably be just fine. I don't abuse my rigs.
