Anyone else installed a Custom Autosound dash speaker??? Why are they 5x7???

I recieved my Custom Autosound dash speaker for my 72. The part numbers are correct but its a 5x7. The factory is more like a 4x10 so why does CA use a 5x7? The dash opening is about 9" so that means there will be gaps in the corner if I use this speaker.

That's size they sent me, too. I'm sorry you missed the thread on Custom Autosound in the past. I have the full set up and it sux!! USA6, 6 disc changer, kick panel speakers and the dual voice coil center speaker. Poor sound quality all around. If I had it to do over again, I'd cut my dash and install a good quality unit. I could have had a lot more sound for what I paid.

I have the dual voice coil speaker by CA also, sounds awful. I'm thinking of just taking it out and going with something behind the seat between the gas tank and the corners. With A/C there is not much room to put anything decent in the stock mounting position. At least I have some 6X9's in the doors (cut by PO).

My response to stereo speakers in the original dash speaker hole is to use (2) 4"X 6" speakers mounted on a piece of 1/2" plywood. Sonnds great, less money out of pocket.

You just gave me an idea. I remember buying a set of Pioneer 4" speakers that I was going to put in my Grand Prix but never did. I'm thinking these would fit great under there but using a piece of plywood, cutting the holes to fit the speakers into, then making a braket to fit the piece of wood to mount it. I think I'm going to try this (should sound better than that CA 5x7).

4" speakers would work too. Before the 4X6 speakers, I had a pair of 4" coax speakers that never made it in to another project that I sold. I installed the 4x6 speakers in the truck when I needed 4" speakers for the dash of my convertable.

Dash Speaker Mount Fab?

Ok guys, I appreciate the comments on the dual voice coil speaker. I was thinking about getting one but really wondered if they were any good. Sounds like they aren't, and they probably couldn't handle the type of power I want to put through them anyway.

I like the idea of using two quality speakers mounted in a bracket of some description. Does anyone have dimensions or other specifics on how to make such a bracket, and how to secure it and the speakers under the speaker grill so that it doesn't rattle, or get in the way of the head unit and A/C outlet? Pics would be great, but yeah, I know...almost impossible.

Thanks...SSOW

If you mount the 4" speakers, take some pictures of the "bracket" before you put it up in there. I have seen the CA speakers listed, but Scott's feedback kept me from even considering their products. I hadn't thought about making my own wood base for some higher quality speakers.
