New Compressor Is In...I'm ready for vacation! [and 300-buck$ lighter :(]
Well, it is a success! Thanx to all of you who lended advice. I removed all of the old oil and blew out the system with dry Nitrogen. Replaced the compressor and the rec/drier and installed them with Nylog blue on the "o" rings and charged up again with N2 and checked for leaks. Held for an hour no change. Pulled a deep vac for another hour. This time I put in 26 oz of gas (the mfg. of the system said 24 and before I had 31) and stopped. The air was cool last nite (80 in front of the condenser) and my pressures jived with the ambient. I was watching through the sight glass and I could see the bubbles and the liquid flow in relation to the actuation of the TXV. Everything looked normal. Vents were nice and cold (37degrees) and the system was cycling normally. Best thing is this new Sanden is as quiet as a church-mouse and does not labor like the old one did. Man what a difference! I guess the old one was on it's way out for a while now. Now I am ready for vacation!
I know several of you have put in aftermarket A/C (Vintage Air, Old Air, Classic Auto Air, etc) units and I need one question answered. What is the final amount (not the specified amount by manufacturer) of 134A you ended up putting in to your system? I have an "enhanced" Old Air system with a bigger evaporator. Thanx! |

The instructions with my VA kit said 1.8 lbs. That's about what we did. Haven't put a thermometer at the vents, but I can frost them if I want to.
