does a person have to weld to shave a tailgate? will body shops shave a tailgate - and whats a decent price? also my tailgate is messed up (as they all are) you have to pull up and out you know to get it to open what is the best way to rectify this? thanks

Try Sir Michaels, Mar-K, or even LMC they all have items for tailgates.

I went with a Sir micheals relocator and filler. Then I used body panel adhesive instead of welding to avoid warping...worked out great

I bought the louvered skin from www.mar-k.com. The tailgate relocator too. It's one of the best I found. Cost about $75. The skin is tack welded and glued to the tailgate. The tailgate is considerably heavier.

put my vote in Sir Mikes, im getting that smooth bolt on roll pan for the stepside and the tailgate cover.

oh yah - i hafta lift up on my tailgate to get it to open and i have to hold the handle open to close it.. whada i do to rectify this? also where do i get body panel adhesive?

I duuno.. the idea of spending a load of cash for some bent metal, not even compound bent, kinda irks me. I'll get a handle relo kit, but will probably skin it myself. I know, it'll take longer, i may even have to redo it, but not so much the money, but doing it yourself does have a bit of satisfaction. Think abotu it.. what you're reallt covering is the center section, and the handle pull area. nothing says you can't at least try. i have a silverado with the cover plate, so I can use that as a bit of a guide. not too bad. I'll let you know how it goes, i wanna get it done by the end of the year. I'm going to use 18ga, that's good enough since it's just a cover, otherwise I'd use 16ga, but that's a bear. I don't slam it anyway. even if I have to use body filler, it will be minimal.. No Bondo! lotsa other good stuff, more expensive, but better, lighter, etc.

I had the prob too. the metal cups that the gate has attached, sometimes the screw that holds them on (some are welded) come loose, and the gate sits about 3/16 lower than it should, and causes that. you also have to raise it to latch it. I lowered mine back, gave the ma couple of welds in place, and it's almost like new. My dad has a 77 just like me, and I just drilled a couple of holes and used self tapping screws, same thing. once you get it off, you'll see what I mean. really easy.

Another vote here for the Sir Michael's handle relocator kit. I bought one and cut up a brand new tailgate to put it in - without ever doing it before

- ballsy I know, but that's how easy it is to do. Plus it's cheap (cost wise) Great quality as far as I'm concerned, and the fit for the handle kit is great. I will be ordering the tailgate cover as well (probably from Mar-K, as the filler plate that Sir Mikes sent with the kit didn't fit very well.
