Buying '84 K5, 4x4, Dead auto, 6.2 Diesel, $300

Found a sweet deal word of mouth from a coworker of mine

'84 K5 blazer, black and silver, 6.2 Diesel (runs good), Dead 700r4 transmission (big suprise there), 205 T-case, 3.73 opens front and rear, 33x10.5 all around + spare (6 lug), removeable hardtop. Seller wanted $350 for it, I offered $300 and he accepted the offer.

Mechanically, the tranny is completely dead and it needs new spiders in the rear, but he's including those. What differences are there between a diesel 700r4 and a gasser 700r4? A local pick-a-part has 700r4's for pennies on the dollar, but I'm almost definitely sure they're all gassers. I would be willing to put an auto in it just to get it on the road but I'd prefer a manual if I could get one. Will an NV4500 bolt up to a 700r4 NP205 t-case? Any other manual trannies worth looking into for this truck?

Truck currently has dual (backyard mechanic special) 2.5" exhaust running all the way back, would a pair of manifolds off of a 6.5 NA diesel increase performance at all? How about 6.5 heads? Crossover pipes? How hard is it to bolt up a 6.5 turbo and make everything work nicely? Any merit to upgrading the FI system to electronic off of a newer 6.2/6.5 (If any of you followed my posts in the engine & drivetrain forums, I did a full 454 TBI upgrade to my '72 C10/350 and did all the wiring myself, so the electronic side is no problem). Anything else worth mentioning to gain more performance acceleration wise?

The only real difference I believe is the torque converter. Diesel TC's lock up at much lower RPM's.

The turbo set-p off a 6.5 won`t clear the heater/AC unit.If you`r not scared of electronics,try a 4L80E.There are kits to convert to manual.Don`t know who makes it.There is an adapter to mate NV4500 to NP205.Or,get a 241t-case.

Kits to convert what to manual? The blazer or the valve body on the 4l80e?

Picked truck up last night, tires are so wide I ended up monster trucking the trailer to get it loaded. Pictures when I get off work this afternoon.

leave it mechanical, take the injection pump off, get a rebuild kit that will turn it up 20%. If you really want it to run, rebuild the whole motor, polish the crank, port the heads. You won't need a turbo then for it to run, and it will also pull a house down.

You sure thats a 205? I'm thinking it should be a 208.

You could always find a 4l80e/np205 from a '91(only year offered) V30 and slap it in there. Kinda hard to find that combo, though.

If you want a 700r4, I've got one in my garage. Previous owner said it came out of a diesel suburban ( 82 or 83 ) and that it works. I was gonna put it in a 72 Blazer but sold that project this spring. Now it's just wasting space.

My neighbor might take it but thats iffy. He needs it for a 83 IROC.

Email if interested- and I'll check with him. I just want it gone and I'm in Shakopee MN.

Tried to PM you but your box is full. Can't email you since you didnt give me an email address.

If its cheap/free I'll take it, currently however I'm in Ames, IA attending school at ISU, I'll be back up this friday in minnesota until monday evening so anytime then would work to get together. After you've checked with your neighbor (assuming he doesn't want/cant use it) let me know when you'll be around this weekend and phone #/cell # so I can get ahold of you and get directions this coming weekend. Thanks!

Btw just so your neighbor knows - a diesel 700r4 will shift so far below his power band it will make his car seem like a dog. In order to change a 700r4 from diesel to gas a new governor and a higher stall speed torque converter are necessary, as well as a new tail housing (assuming that you went from 4WD to 2WD)

Sorry about the PM box. My neighbor fixed his tranny and doesn't need mine. My e-mail is jdharms@msn.com

You can have it if you come and pick it up. There is no torque converter with it.

I'll also clear out the pm box
