Taking Off The Cab: This easy?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm going to be taking off my cab pretty soon, to paint it the RIGHT way. Is it this easy though?
1.) Unhook shift linkage
2.) Unhook Steering Column Shaft
3.) Unplug wiring harness
4.) Unhook Heater Core
5.) Remove doors
6.) Remove the 4 Cab Mount Bolts
7.) Use CherryPicker with straps to lift cab off frame

Is that about it? Doesn't seem very hard, for a good payoff (Completely same color cab)

Don't forget to unhook the throttle cable, washer hose, unbolt the front fenders, speedo cable, vacume hose to air control, unbolt brake booster/master cylinder.. All the things on the firewall which also connect to the frame/engine.

I dunno about the cherry picker idea.. It will probably be easier to just get some guys to help you lift it off (4 guys total will be perfect)... but make sure you have a place to set it! on blocks is nice.

I have removed two cabs and it's fairly simple. As mentioned before, having 4-people to lift the cab off would be ideal.

Take the seat out to make it lighter. Also, don't forget the E-barke cable and engine ground strap (if you have one connected to the firewall). Make sure to drain the brake fluid from the master cylinder resevoir, otherwise it will make a mess.

You are going thru A LOT of work just to paint the cab one color.

i removed mine myself. i put 4x4s under the rockers and jackstands on blocks under that. just jack it up a little at a time, and set it down the same way. i left mine intact. AC, seat, doors, just unhooked everything.

I don't have a windshield wiper motor anymore. I'm going to leave the master cylinder on the firewall, just plug the holes (where the lines connect).
Yeah, it might SEEM like a lot of work, but in the end, I'll be able to pop my hood and not feel stupid that the firewall is a different color.

I painted my inner areas black to make the chrome parts stand out better
and I painted the fenders below the hood line and matched up to the
cowl weatherstrip line for a break to yellow, I dont feel stupid. Unless your going full blown show, I dont think you need to pull the cab,
just my 02 cents.

Yeah, but your motor was out when you painted the firewall, right?

TIMSPEED, I did a cab swap on my 2 trucks by myself. I bought a engine hoist(cherry picker) and unbolted everything. I pulled the seat out and used the seat belt mount holes for a chain mount for the rear. I drilled holes in the floor up near the firewall, for the forward bolts. I made an "X" with the chains, and picked up the cab in the middle of the x with the cherry picker. If you have other people to help balance the cab, it should be easy. I had to do this by myself, and used weights and extending the x chain to pick it up. I also sprayed some sound deading paint on my firewall and underneath the cab. It's called BEQUIET, and dries a dull grey color. My truck will be black, so I just sprayed gloss black over that. Hope this helps. David

I've got lift straps to use on it (The big yellow ones) I figger I'll go over to my friends shop, and do it all at once. I already got the new doors gutted, so all I need to do is have him paint the doors/fenders/hood on stands, then roll in the cab/bed on seperate dollies, and shoot em, then just set the cab/bed back on and bolt on the doors/fenders/hood.
End result...NIIICE truck.

my entire front end was off, but you could still paint the firewall for daily
driver quality. All mine consists of is, I scraped and sanded the firewall,
sprayed it with self leveling undercoat for a smooth finish and painted the the inner fenders the same, except I put on duplicolor black gloss then a
coat of clear on that.
