It looks to be just a hose coming out of an EGR hole. Since it appears the EGR is hooked up (driver's side front valve cover to carb base), I'd yank the hose and put a breather in there.

that, my friend, is a breather hose for the PCV system. filtered air from the air cleaner goes into that tube. just take it out & get a push-in breather (chromie) from your favorite parts store.

Yep, I didn't really pay attention to the hose, but 68C15 is absolutely right.

EGR=exhaust gas recirculation and it comes from the exhaust manifolds NOT THE VALVECOVER

another thing i notice is all that rubber hose that you're running to supply the carb with is just a great big old fire waiting to happen

if you use the stock air cleaner spacer you will need to keep it. the engine sucks bypass pressure from the bottom end using this and the pcv. if you put a breather there instead, you will have to clean it often because of engine blow-by. i would use it.

Wow, those stupid GM engineers made that hose connect to the air cleaner when all they needed to do was install a slobbering chrome breather instead.

That's what I was thinking. If you want the oil sludge all over your motor then a push in breather cap is for you. If you want that crap burntt off out the exhaust then plumb it to the base of your carb....

So it needs to go like this. I can't find any place for it to hook up to.does anyone have a better pic of it connected to the carb base.

Thanks,
Troy

Forget the carb base...the hose hooks to the AIR CLEANER base, not the carb base. Don't have a pic handy, but there's a small plastic filter that fits on the inside of the air cleaner, with a round end that sticks through the air cleaner base. That hose plugs onto the filter end.

If you're going with an aftermarket air filter, check them first. Many have at least an attachment point for this hose.

Don't hook it to manifold vacuum (carb base). That'll cause all kinds of problems.

The stock spacer for a small block will be taller than the BB one. Here's a quick pic of mine.

I don't have a spacer for my air cleaner (it's a 10" from Auto Zone), it just sits on top of the carb, and has no place for this hose to hook up to.

I run a push in breather in my moroso covers, & dont have any problems with the eng puking oil out the top. my 383 is pretty fresh, but gets revved pretty tight at times. as low as the truck is geared, its pretty hard to shift fast enough to keep the eng under 6800-7000 for the 1st couple gears! I dont have to wipe oil sludge off the top of the eng crazyL

same here, i have 5000 miles on my new motor with a breather and no oil on my motor. doesnt quite get up to 6800-7000 but 5500 multiple times daily. with how long it takes to get oil to go down those aftermarket valve coler bafles i cant see any oil coming out very easily. unless something is cloged and the heads just fill up with oil, but then you have more that oil bolwage to worry about

since you have an aftermarket breather, you are left with the push in chrome filter.

Which, consequently, isn't the end of the world that some folks would apparently have you believe. Yeah, they'll throw an oily mist on your valve covers. Yep, you'll need to wipe that off from time-to-time. Hey, if it bothers you that bad, either put on a stock air cleaner or get a crankcase evacuation system.
