Making a short truck bed out of a long bed

In the past couple of years I've seen 2 trucks where the long bed had been shortened to make a short fleetside bed. If the guy had not shown the weld line to me I would have never noticed it. I asked the guy how it had been done, he had bought the trucks from someone else and didn't know. My question is, does any one on this board know how this is done, if so can you give me some information. I have a long bed and would like to try this.
