Emissions
Looking at Swervin's thread about new exhaust got me to wondering how emissions work. Up here in North Dakota, we do not need to pass any emissions, but any exhaust shop in town will not touch your vehicle if it doesn't have the emissions on it when it is suppose to have it.
So my question is this. How do emissions work for those of you who have to abide by them? I have a 1982 Chevy Scottsdale that was a 6.2L Diesel. It has a gas 350 in it now. So does the truck have to be a true diesel to pass emissions? If not, would the 350 have to have cats on it since it really started it's life as a diesel and didn't have them? I have always wondered about how something like this works. Thanks!

My engine is far from stock, with XE268 Comp cam. The rest of my stuff is emissions legal simply because I must have all the emissions crap hooked up even if it don't work. So if I have to bolt it up, I may as well have it working. It doesn't rob much if any horsepower. Just mostly looks like a turd in the engine bay. The cam is way past being emissions legal. But I pass emissions very easily. Way under the limit.
My understanding on engines is it has to be the same year/style of engine or newer. If newer, it must have all the emissions stuff from the newer engine. If you go older engine, it will have to have the stuff your year had. Now diesels don't have to do emissions tests. So, if you have a gas engine in your truck, it's really illegal. I guess you could do a test for the gas engine of the year it is. Here, they put your VIN in the computer and it tells them what they have to do. So if they type in your diesel VIN, they would know it wouldn't need an emissions inspection. If they were smart enough to notice the gas engine, if they wanted to be a ahole, they could probably turn it down. I'm not sure what you would have to do to get it to pass in this case. It's a bunch of crap I tell you. But, you do what you have to do and move on.

Here in my town (i'll keep it secret) i don't think they do emissions test, they just check for a cat when you get your inspection sticker. But there are plenty of places that don't even come outside to look at your vehicle; you give em the 10 bucks for a sticker and they slap it on. Oh and i do believe my dad unhooked all the smog stuff years ago on ol red, or did he heh heh
