97 Silverado front brakes
Any advice........
I have a 97 Silverado that needs front brakes.....however the repair shop said I "need" the hubs replaced to the tune of $400 each. He said it is a design flaw by GM. He told me the ABS is sent a signal bacause they are bad that cancels the front braking the last 20 feet. Doesn't sound right to me but I am not that mechanically inclined. Anyway the whole brake job (fronts only) is going to cost me $1000. Hopefully someone out there could offer some advice before I pay for this. Thank you very much. |

I agree with the Prop_Washer2. I just put front brakes on my 97 GMC K1500 Suburban about 6 wks. ago. They turned one rotor, purchased 1 Lifetime rotor (other rotor couldn't be turned) and new Wagner pads and it was about $80.00. Calipers didn't need replaced. I did the work in about 1.5 hrs. I'd find a new mechanic...

Was your ABS light on in the dash?

i have a 97' and these trucks dont really have hubs i thought because the studs are pressed into the rotors! then the bearings and race go inside the rotor!i replaced both front rotors and pads and calipers for under $300 and all are acdelco! (hook up at dealership!!) it shouldnt cost nearly want he wants, get a new mechanic!

They do have hubs. the lugs aren't pressed into the rotor. You can take the rotor off of the hub assembly without removing any studs.

Either way brakes are easy do them yourself or atleast another shop. BTW where did you take it? Another BTW is the only gm flaw I've heard of (and expeirianced (SP?)) is the rear brake adjuster freezing causing premature wear of the front brakes caused by insufficient braking in the rear because of this I had my first brake job on the front at 32 k didn't have to do the rears until 100k

ok? thats not the way my 97' is set up. you remove the dust cover, then the axle nut and codder pin, then slide the rotor off the spindle and the studs are pressed into the rotor. i just upgraded mine to a 2500 series brake rotor for six lugs instead of five! both of them are the same....no hub!
