Harmonic Balancer Bolt - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Does the harmonic balancer go on the outside of both crank pulleys or on the pulley that is on the back facing the balancer itself? This is for a short waer pump setup and its a 68.

I don't know about your specific setup, but on almost any engine the harmonic balancer goes on after the timing cover. The crank pulley then mounts on/over to the harmonic balancer.

2 is correct.........The washer should be holding the pulley away from the balancer in pic 1, not good.

Longhair, r u sure about this? I'm only a backyard mechanic, but I always thought the purpose of the balancer bolt was to secure the balancer. The three bolts on the outside secure the pulley. But I've been wrong before.....

Maybe on a small block but on the big block pulley there is a recessed area on the balancer just for the washer. This way the washer face sits flush with the front side of the pulley. If you try putting the washer and bolt over the pulley you'll bend it. Here's a picture from a cut away in How to Hot Rod your Big Block Chevy. Page 3. Now I can't say for 100% the same carries over to a small block but it sure seems to me it would.

my 454's are like #1 and the pic mr402 showed . Also the center hole on my pulleys are much larger then the pulley in the pics .

Well after talking to a few people on the board here and a few shops in the area I decided to go with pic #2. Thanks for all of the help. I appreciate it.
