Ram Jet 350

Hello. My dad and I just finished restoring a 1972 Blazer. It currently has a 350 long block in it with a Q-jet carb. I was looking for some performance increase and was interested in the Ram Jet motors, particularly the 350 series. I wanted to know what other people thought about it regarding performance, reliability, and what the Ram Jet might get fuel economy wise. If you do have any other ideas to gain more power, I would like to know. Thank-you

Welcome to the board from Seattle. That's a nice looking Blazer!

If your conserned about fuel economy, first thing you should do is get stock height tires. Second, your gears. It looks like about 36" tires, so I would recommend 4.10's. With lower gears, you may get better highway efficiency, but your going to suck more gas getting the rig up to speed.

What size wheels are those? Also, please fill out your profile so we all know where you are located. You never know if someone is right around the corner from you.

Thanks for the info. Right now I have 17" wheels with 34" tires and the truck only has a 2 inch lift. I "missed-phrased" in the origional thread, and I am sorry for any confusion: I would just like to know some approximate numbers that my truck might get with the Ram Jet 350 in it, or any other way to increase performance.

I have a buddy with a 72 SWB with 350 ram jet and he likes it a lot. They are 350 hp, but have an extremely mild cam so they have terrific street manners. His only complaint is extremely cold starting (say -20). When it is that cold it takes 2-3 attempts to get it going, otherwise it is just briefly click the starter and it goes. You wouldn't have to worry about that where you're from.

What style and manufacturer are those wheels? Also what backspacing?

The wheels are American Racing and are off of a late model tahoe. I believe they are a 4 1/2 backspacing and are called Burst Chrome. This particular wheel is polished though because I had to have the centers bored out to make them fit over the hubs. Skid, could you ask your buddy what kind of mileage he gets with that motor?

Here are some more pictures. The one I only had the drivers seat in, but thought you might like to see the side panels. And does anyone have any more ideas on how to increse the performance out of this truck, like motor mods, or a new crate engine, etc.? Thanks

Welcome to the board- and it's a great looking truck! Lots of crate motors out there- Summit, Jegs, GM Performance, Jasper, your local engine shop can probably make something to your specs. The latest issue of Classic Trucks magazine has an article on pulling a 5.3 liter out of an older -2000? to 2004 and installing it- seems pretty easy to upgrade to a new motor/tranny combo- The mag said junkyards (oops- salvage yards) were getting $2000-$3500 for motor/trans/harnesses/computers. I prefer the smooth idle of a 454 and a 750 Holley- like boating, you may only need all that power once, but at least you know it's there! Plus, the 454 logo under front side markers looks SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOL!
Good luck with your power solution.
Carl
