starter wireing...
Trying to wire up my new starter. Went ahead and bought a mini starter.
Problem is, the old starter has 3 wires(2 from firewall and 1 from battery). The new starter only has hookups for 2 wires. Is one wire just a ground? Nick |

Uhh, no. Your old starter was for an old style dizzy. Your new starter is for HEI. The third terminal on your old one was to supply 12v to the coil for starting. If you have HEI go ahead and use it, just don't use the wire to the coil, it is purpl I think. Also, if you do have HEI you might check to make sure you have a non-resistance wire going to your HEI unit, as it needs a full 12v to run good. I say this because you still have the old wiring on your old starter.

So just don't hook up the purple wire? Leave it unhooked and cut it off?
Yes I do have HEI. |

IF I remember correctly, it's the yellow wire that you dont need when you have an HEI....

Purple wire is your start wire. It went to the "S" terminal on your old starter. The yellow wire went to the "R" terminal on old starter. On your new starter the purple wire goes to the small terminal-battery cable to large terminal. You do not need the yellow wire now that you have HEI.

I have cable coming from the battery, then a red wire, then a purple wire. No yellow.

OK. I trace it back and make sure the purple is stock.
If it is not stock or if I can't tell, how will I tell which wire goes where? Does anyone have a wireing diagram? Thanks for everyones help, Nick |

If the red wire has a terminal big enough to go on the battery post it is your fuse link that supplies current to the fuse panel. (what model truck?)

Silly question but if i have been running all 3 wires for some time with HEI installed. Do i just not hook the yellow up and tape it off? I mean no problems except when she gets hot she starts acting up and won't start.

Just cut it off and tape it up. Mine has worked flawlessly since I did it.
