vacuum assist for 65
I am in the process of purchasing a really nice partially restored 65 Chevy truck. It has the original drums brakes with single reservoir master cylinder. Do they make a vacuum assist for this unit. Do I have to scrouge the junk yards for the mounting hardware. If anyone has went through this process, could you share your experience.

I remember reading an article in Classic Truckin a while back about putting a power booster in a truck this bodystyle.I think it was an aftermarket setup, but I can't remember what company.I beleive a booster from a 67-72 could be made to work fairly easy, and you should be able to get one new or reman. As for the original power brake setups for these trucks, you'd probably be lucky to find one.I've only seen a couple of these trucks with factory power brakes, and they had a strange looking setup-the booster and master cyl was mounted at an angle pointed off to the left side, with a bellcrank assembly for the pushrod.Don't know why or if they were all that way;as I said all I've seen is a couple.Looked like the same setup they used on the flat faced cowl trucks.I really don't think you would want to mess with a setup like that, but good luck whatever you decide.Post some pics if you can.

Thanks for the help 60-66 nut. I figured most of the 60 - 66 owners fitted their trucks with power brakes. Yours was the only response I received, so I must have figured wrong. I have a 69 short bed that I put a vacuum booster on. It works great. I guess I can put the same set up on the 65.
Thanks again, 69 modified. |

I used one from a '80 C-10, the two original M/C mounting holes lined up w/two on '80 model booster. Marked the other holes, removed, drilled. Used half my original rod & half '80 - using a threaded coupler in between. Brian
