New to the group - which engine??

Hello Gentlemen, I have a '72 Cheyenne LWB, all original except the engine. I am planning on putting an LS1/4L60 in it this next spring. Would you go with the 5.7 or the 6.0 version. I have heard that the 5.7 would be quicker and get better mileage, but get more torque with the 6.0. This is my first post and will attempt to load pics.

I know nothing about the newer engines, but the more torque the better in my book!

Got the same set up in my 71. Vortec out of a 97.I went with the 5.7 and put in a 100hp prom. The thing hauls, gets fairly good milage, and has enough torqe to rip my 35's loose for a pretty good distance.Wasen't that hard to put in.Alot easier than the tpi motor I had first.

Just curious

Thanks for the welcome... Hey MikeP did you put in a bed tank? fuel cell or blazer? did you use in-tank or in-line pump? Also, did you change out your ignition switch or install a relay, I hear the swap puts too much power through the original switch.

The 6.0 will put our more powe and torque, but out of the box the LS1 5.7 has the edge, modify the 6.0 though and itll outrun LS1s all day. If you look at 4th gen 98+ camaro speed shops/pages there are hundreds of different ways to build either motor. The 6.0 is probably more suited to a truck, with a mild cam it'd be 350+horse power with the drieability of EFI, gas mileage wit teh 6.0s isn't that great tho. And lastly, Welcome to the boards.

It depends. Are you after speed or are you going to race the truck? If so go with the 6.0 set up and stroke it. If not go with the 5.7. Even the 5.7 with heads/cam will be be good for 400-450 rwhp (depending on how wild you go with the cam). Can't say anything about the fuel economy with the auto but with a six speed and 6.0 22+mpg are attainable in my freinds '99 SS.
