need help, turn signal problem
My son called from college and said his turn signals quit working for him. OH, vehicle is '72 Blazer with 350/th350 Told him to try a few things. The hazard lights work. Switched flashers around the hazard lights still work, no blinkers. Parking lights work. Half moon shaped connector from steering column is tight. Took the steering wheel off, wires seem to be tight from what he can see, did not take the whole top end apart. He does not have a 12v tester down there with him. Any ideas please
Thanks Chuck

A bad ground. Tell him to check it. The most overlooked thing. Kerry

I thought about grounds, just thought it was strange both sides went out at the same time. Seems if it were a ground the hazard wouldn't flash either. He said parking lights were bright as ever. Everything worked about a month ago before he went back to school, had to get it inspected then.

Grounds are a mother hubbard so to speak. Whenever I have had a problem with either of my old trucks, I always check the grounds and believe it or not, most of the time that is where the problem lies. I have seen the flashers work ok for emergency and not for the turn signals. I know it doesn't make sense. Kerry

It isn't the ground...the ground is holding up to the 4 ways and break lights...so the ground is good. (I am asuming the brake lights work here)

When he check with hazard, did all 4 lights work? Or is he just looking at the dash? He could have bad bulbs. Hard to believe it would have happened on both sides at once, but he is in college and you never can tell what happened to the truck. Bumped in the parking lot, off roading, ect, you never tell everything you know.

Yeah all 4 lights at the corners flashed and he said brake lights work. With my luck it'll turn out to be 2 bad bulbs at the same time but then the flashers wouldn't work then would they?

Son borrowed a test light, got power going up the column. When flashers are on the light circuits are all hot. When the turn signal is on, power up the column but nothing coming back down. Does the switch have a known problem like breaking wires or something? How hard is it to check/replace??

Sounds like a bum switch. Normally it is the brake lights that go out.
It isn't too much work to do, a steering wheel puller is needed, but can be purchased cheaply, or rented from a parts store chain. |
