steering column
hello! does anybody know if a 73-87 Blazer automatic steering column/shifter will bolt up to my 70 Chevy stepside? It has a four speed now, and I want to convert it to an automatic. Thanks for your help!

No, it won't.
The 73 and newer columns are very different in size, and they have the ignition key cyinder in them rather than the dash.

hey firefighter, thanks for the info. It seems not too much is interchangeable with the 73-87 trucks, which is too bad because you basically trip over them everywhere around here (NH). I'd like to keep it looking original at least anyway... Maybe I will find another 67-72 auto shift column. Thank you.

Ask on the parts board. They go for 20-40 bucks on there all the time.

my frame mods. the only thing that went right
I have put the complete cross member and steering along with the sway bar out of an 87 Chevy truck into my 67s frame with very little mods. I have test fit the column in the truck and the only problems have been. A. the ignition switch [on the column base] needs relocated along with the column wiring pig tail. B. prefabricating a firewall support and flipping the rag joint to accommodate the off sized bolts. As I have learned its just a matter of how much time you want to put into it.
One day I will put the 4spd transmission out of the 87 in it too.

What about the fact that the new column is twice the diameter of the old column?

I dont dought you L.H.M. Im just posting what Ive done.
It fits in the dash and the cradle bracket holds her up to the dash. From what I see it will fit with some modifications. When I put it back in I will post pics but it does match in length and fits up into the dash. Other than the mods mentioned it works on my 67. I made a new strap that will mount to the firewall and dash. The radius from center is larger but there is enough of an opening to fit it in. Im also not using the original instrument cluster I hope to fab in a Cadillac dash board. But that is way off in the future. I dont drought you L.H.M. Im just posting what Ive done. It might be because no one told me it wouldnt work or Im to bull headed to know it

Some of the chevy vans after 73 have the ignition on the dash. I pulled a tilt out of a 78 van with a tilt and the ignition on the dash.
Good luck |

Vdog, the key stayed in the dash in the van untill 81, and there were a hand full of 82's with a key less column.

thank you guys. I did look for a column in the parts section, but it's so much work weeding through everything. I'd rather get one I can just bolt in anyhow. Anything will fit anywhere with time and money, right?

I traded for a nice '73-87 tilt column only to find that it didn't fit well. The van columns are easy to find in non-tilt, a bit harder in tilt.
Crosby said that little is interchangable with the newer trucks. I've actually been surprized at how little chassis and engine parts changed over the years. I only had to drill a couple of holes to fit an '84 front end to my '68 frame.
