Damn Ash!

Woke up this AM and my blazer was full of it. Atleast we didnt get a morning dew or i suppose my truck would'a been full of MUD, how pleasent. Theres a 14,000 acre wildfire NOt far from my house, at all. I'm SURE you've noticed i havent been posting as much lately. I've been working crush the last week or two, and its taken up just about all of my time.

Heres a link to the fire

I saw the blaze from town 2 nights ago, and yesterday AM on my way BACK from work (9 AM) the smoke looked 10X as thick. Once i got home dad and i hopped in his truck and what else? Headed for the fire We apparently made it up to the best "viewing" point , along with 15 other people, before they blocked off the road. It's a REAL remote one through the "gueysers" ... the countrys biggest natural underground steam field....or something like that? They use it for POWER and Sewer waist.

Man it was crazy up there. We were 100Yard or so away from a pond 6+ choppers were dipping into for water!!! 2 of witch were aircranes! I can still here them flying over my house(refueling) now! I think they have some old bombers flying around doing drops aswell. WHat a BIG DEAL this is.

It's looking like i'm on call for some wineries should they need to start getting tractors and implements out'a the way ASAP. They (CDF) say it's 10% contained, but if you ask me that's BS. Yikes a skycrane just flew over, NO joke!

This site Gives a good summery of it all too.

I'll keep ya posted as best i can.

Seated in an orange convertible Jeep on Geysers Road, Ralph and Teresa Bastian watched the blaze move southwest. They spotted the smoke from their Geyserville home, which they rebuilt after it burned to the ground in a fire a decade ago.
To give you an idea of how close i was, these people past as i watched from that road. we made it up around 9am, i guess it was closed soon there after, i only remember his jeep 'cuz like i said, no one was up there so you saw the 10-15 ppl that were, and his jeep was REAL nice, a done up older CJ.

If I'm not mistaken, those helicopters are also used (when properly retrofitted) as the the world's largest airborne cranes....seen a show on them, showing them placing building sections on large skyscrapers......sikorsky I think......?

Have a HUGE lift rating, due the dual engines on the single rotor....

Geysers Geothermal plants

I worked for PG &E in 1986. I spent 5 weeks up in this country doing settlement surveys on many of their power plants in Geysers projects (big money projects). Very steep, brushy hot country. Fighting fires could be very dangerous and tough going. PG& E later sold off power plants to try and get financially stable again. The power business is unpredictable and fast paced. If those hills get to burnt up next thing they will have to worry about is errosion. Just my 2 cents on area.

There were some of those skycranes fighting the fires in Carson City in July. They are awesome to watch. Hope they get it under control soon. As mentioned earlier, now you have to worry about errosion. The Department Of Forestry has already started doing that in the hills above Carson City. It's been a really bad summer for wild fires out west.

luckily the fire stayed out of where most people live. It was on the boarder of Sonoma/Lake county. I think it ended up burning 4 homes, 12 vehichles? Something along those lines. not alot at all for the amount of land it burned up. I feel for the people whose homes went up, but when you live in those type of conditions....ya cant fool yourself.
