Why you use a double roller chain!

I had a really bad week for cars, brought two of them home on the back of a tow truck all in one day. Monday night we (whole family) were just leaving state fair, luckly with two vechicles, when my son calls me on the cell and says the 70 died. Well I turned around and we check it out - no spark. Wouldn't you know it I had pulled the glove box out (which had a spare module) to work on the interior. Well after an hour and a half home and back changing the module, then the capacitor, then the coil still nothing. So I pulled the cap and watched the rotor go around in fits and starts. By then its two in the mornig and I have to leave for work at four so we left it to be towed home later that day. Then I get to work pickup the stuff I have to deliver get half way through and the clutch packs up, another one home by tow. Got the truck apart today, have a look:

That'll do it every time. The last time it happened to me I heard the chain jump a couple of teeth.

This is what the oil pan looks like. I'm going to try and clean things up (clean pan and pump, put in oil and filter, run priming rod until drill gets hot, change oil and filter, start it up and run until it gets warm, change oil and filter again and pray). Any other ideas?

You ever wonder who came up with that nylon-plastic timing gear idea? He should have been threw out on his rear!!

You'll be fine. I've changed a bunch of them like that. Just drain the oil out and refill with new stuff. The oil pump pickup has a screen on it to keep stuff just like that out of it. The little plastic teeth left in there will set in the bottom of the pan and you'll never know they're there until someday you pull the pan you'll see them again.

Any idea how many miles are on that engine?? Now would be the time to install a bigger cam if you haven't done that already.

Last time i had one do that the oilpump screen was FULL of nylon. Lift the engine, drop the pan and see. Then put in a new oilpump while you are there.

71Chevy4-speed, I am not sure but I have heard horror stories about gear drives inducing harmonics which end up cracking the cam. either way I dont believe they are wirth it unless you are running about 8000rpm & dont want any spark scatter.
when I bought my used 350 it had already been replaced with a double roller which was still in better shape than the stock replacement one that came with my kit. been in there for 7000 miles & no problem yet.
neonlarry, those small pieces scare me. how about blocking the oil filter bypass valve during the "flush" phase?

You might want to place a strong magnet on the pan just to keep those tiny pieces from moving around. Just a thought. Good luck and keep on truckin'.....Jerry

my 305 has a gear drive in it. would it be worth it to put it in the 350 when i swap? i'm putting a cam, lifter, and roller rocker set in the 350 before i swap.

Leave the oil plug out and use a solvent gun with low air pressure to rinse the parts out the drain hole. THe low air pressure should keep them from going up the sides of the block, and most of them should go out the drain plug.

Seeing how it looks like you have the pan off. I'd spray it out with brake or carb cleaner. Wouldn't hurt to spray out the oil pump too...
