I don't know what the part is supposed to be called. I need the little door inside the heater/AC box that switches from heat/defrost vents to AC vents. Can someone tell me the technical term for this item, and where I can get one? I am thinking its a wrecker only item? If so does anyone have one? I really need it!

It is called a diverter box and you can buy them new and used (at times). There is a way to repair them if you can do a clever welding job. The door separates from the hinge pin because it is made of plastic with a bonded on rubber seal.

We rivet a piece of sheet metal to the door
and then weld the sheet metal to the hinge
pin and this makes a pretty permanent repair.

I don't know of anywhere you can buy just the flapper door. Several places sell the divertor box, but it ain't cheap (over $50). I thought about repairing mine but it looked like you would have to practically saw the divertor box in half to get to the flap, so I just bit the bullet and bought a new box.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I will try that myself. I was just hoping to buy one somewhere. That was a real marketing genius who decided to make it a plastic door and metal hinge.

Well to look at the bright side, I now have a complete understanding on how the sytem works!

If the flapper (diverter baffle) is still there and it's just the hinge that is broken, as was the case with mine, I just cut some plast that was the same width and about two inches long and got some epoxy and smothered the flapper and then the plastic braces and held them in place until they set...it's been working fine ever since.

I know I saw replaces boxes for under $100 new as some of the online old chevy truck stores.

Ya, its broken right where the plastic meets the metal rod, kinda under the rubber.

I think i will disassemble it and see if I can repair or make something before I try and buy a new one.

Repo...that's exactly how mine was broken...make sure that you work with the hinge itself to free it up and make it move as easily as possible...then just do what i did (two pieces of plastic and epoxy the heck out of it)...it will work and will save you $100. I cut back that rubber on the hinge a bit so I could get epoxy in the hinge area (where the plastic meets the metal rod) and then put the plasitc pieces as much over the hinge as possible and still have it move correctly. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I think all of the A/C systems I have gotten had that piece broken, I epoxyed one back together and it held well. That 2 part epoxy works wonders on some things.

Did you try your local Chevy dealer? One local dealer here has 3 on the shelf. The duct can be ordered if the dealer does not have it in stock. It is refered to as the air selector duct. If you know somebody that can get you a discount the original GM part can be had for less than most of the aftermarket venders sell reproductions for.

Richard the aftermarket dealers are selling the GM original air selector's ( diverter box is actual name) there are no reproductions of these. I know we carry them.
