Wheel weights, whats considered heavy?
how much does a wheel have to weigh before you consider it a "heavy" wheel? and what is consider a "light weight" wheel? i am talking in lbs.

He's just asking what size of wheel weights are considered to be heavy. I'm not really sure but there's two huge ones on my spare tire. It's a 16" split rim with a 7.5/16LT tire. I'll check 'em out tomorrow and post 'em.

I think he is talking about the actual wheel. I thought wheel weights as well but when I read it again I think it is the weight of the wheel itself.

FOR ME, anything more than 2 oz is too much. If you have a "Good" tire then it shouldn't take a whole lot of weight to balance it. I've seen a few rim problems that will also amplify an out of balance condition, or not getting the rim seated properly on the balancing equipment. I had 4 tires put on my truck about a year ago and one of them had a bunch of weight on it. The tire didn't feel right. They rebalanced the tire several times, and no matter what they did, or where they put the wheel it shook the truck badly. After returning to the dealer for about the 6th time I made them remove the tire and give me a new one. No problems since!

I would say if the rim weights as much or more than a stock rim (same size) it is a heavy wheel. My brother in law bought some good looking alum rims for his honda that weigh almost as much as my steel rims on my truck. He now has lots of handling problems but they look good. It takes more force to move a heavy wheel but also takes more force to stop it. In a light vehicle you can really tell the difference.

ok so say we are talking about a 67-72 chevy 2wd truck. would 39lbs per wheel be considered heavy?

Don't have a 20" wheel to compare but I would say it is a heavy wheel. In aluminum wheels casts wheels are usually the heaviest and cheapest followed by machined billet and forged. Looks aside, it seems the more a wheel cost the lighter it is. Machined and forged wheels are stronger so less material is needed making them lighter. I think it would have to be a big weight change to notice as heavy as out trucks are. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I don't quite get the question. Why does it matter? I would be more concerned with max load rating than actual wheel weight. Not tryin to be a smart a$$ or anything, but we are not driving autocross vehicles. Wouldn't think unsprung weight would make a differance on a truck.
