How many crossmembers do I need?

Forgive the apparent ignorance on these posts. I've got one of those "puzzle" projects where I have most of the parts but need to put them all together (correctly). Small block v-8 and th350 auto trans. Best I can figure I have two engine stands (one on each frame rail) and one trans cross member back under the cab. Is that it? Does anything support the back of the engine'bell husing where the engine and trans come together? Thanks.

BowLowTie,

That's all the support you need for that setup. My '69 came with the I6/3speed, and had the crossmember under the bellhousing like you mention, but I removed it when I changed to the smallblock and now have the setup you describe.

Trucks that had the bellhousing crossmember didn't have any other crossmembers at the rear of the tranny (except 4WD, which had another one for the xfer case).

My '72 came stock with the 350/350 combo, and had only the three support points like you mention. All later trucks came that way, too, with no more bellhousing supports.

And don't sweat the "ignorance" thing. It's the single largest cause of learning known to man...
