10" sub in a 71

I have had several of these ol trucks, and the stereo is always the hardest thing to get situated where it sounds good.
I am using a pair of 6x9s on the front channel, and a 10"sub on the rear channel. The question is,with the gas tank behind the seat, where can I mount the 10? I don't know if there is enough room under the seat,I doubt it.I am concidering mounting it under the dash where the glove compartment is.The inside of the thing is missing anyway, and I might have enough room to mount it in there pointing toward the floor, and still have some kind of a compartment left.

What do you think?

Any other good way to mount a 10 in 71 GMC?

i had a 8" kicker solobaric under the pass side of my bench seeat in my 72. had to remove the seat adjustment cable, but since i am 6 foot, i dont need to scoot the seat forward. it was a pretty deep sub. if you can fab your own box, there shouldn't be a problem. a friend of mine jacked up his seat in his 72 with 1/2" steel plates ( he did it only in the front to get more recline in his seat.) you need some grade 8 bolts and nuts that are the proper length, but as it does work.

measure the overall depth of the sub, then measure the area available under the seat. check the recommendations of the sub manufacturer for box dimensions.

hope this helps.

Thanks I'll check it out.I had an 8 under the seat of my 62 also.I have a table saw,so a box isn't a big deal.

i think there is a solobarrac that needs very little air space to perform properly and that is what you would need(so i was told buy a stereo shop) or you could just puul the tank out and have 20 gallons of sub space back there

i have a 10" under the seat. custom box. the airspace requriements on the sub was a little higher than average so the box is pretty wide.
i will be selling this setup soon when i put the bucket seats in.

Brain, the amount of cubic inches (per sub dia.) is important from what I've read, nate68 has a good looking design. I've been reading alot of car audio webs/forums recently looking for the best sound quality. Try http://www.com/index.asp great info on car audio & alarms... and http://www.clubconcepts.ca/ check out the installs this guy does. I'm considering the Pioneer DEH-P9600MP head (installed in the glovebox), 6 1/2" for the kick pannels and 6" x 9" for the lower doors (for starters). One of the best speaker setups are 6 1/2" component speakers (door or kick area possibly with pods) tweets up around the dash area and of course a sub. I guess it depends on what your individual sound preferances are also. Regards Doug

69 Short Fleet.I am just putting what I already have in the truck right now.Money is getting pretty tight. This is my daily driver,so I have to have it leagal and driving ASAP,I wish i had a lot more time.I started dropping the engine in wed,and I'm hoping to have it legal mon.No problem right?

Anyway I have a Panasonic Cassette deck, pioneer 120 watt amp,10" MTX sub,and a pair of Alpine 6x9's.The 6x9 don't do much for the sound other than mids, and tweets, the sub is the butt of the whole system,as you already know.I'm saving the good stuff for the real project.

You could build your own boxes to the size you need. eg: I built two boxes that just fit a set of Pioneer 4X10 100w speakers. Then I sealed the boxes with silicone so they were air tight and and tied them to the amp on one channel. They hit like a single 10. They sit under the front of the seat facing forward. Good luck.

Sub Box

You can make any shape you want with fiberglass. It is some awesome stuff to work with. I made this one but it is where the tank used to be. You could use the same concept to build one under the seat. These are two 10's hooked up to a Pioneer 200 watt amp. that runs through an electronic crossover. The bass will make your eyeballs rattle and the rest of the system is crystal clear.

Yes, it took me 8 years to finish my resto (just on the road last month) and I've been waiting for 2 years to put my sound sys togeather... going to buy the head in @ 1 month. Is your amp a "Pioneer GM 120" ? I had a beauty system in my Camero, KEX-50 head (twin shaft cassette) GM 120 amp, GM-7 EQ and 6 x 9's I temp installed it in the Camero as I was waiting to get my truck resto finished and someone ripped-off my car!!! Never saw it again... the old school Pioneer stuff they still pull in lots of bids on e-bay. Gonebad2 did you build that box? I'd love to learn how to make glass boxes, pods, ect. I duuno theres something about putting on Peter Frampton Comes Alive (side 2) and cranking it through a clean powerfull system as your going down the highway that makes life just that much better (lol), Doug

69 Short fleet: yes, I did build that box. The frame (skeleton) of the box was made with 1"x2" 's. Then, fleece material was stretched very tightly over the frame and stapled into place. I mixed up a batch of resin and painted it on the fleece material. Once it dried, it was almost like a drum skin. Then, I started laying out the resin soaked cloth. I did cloth fpr two layers. Then I laid matting. I laid fiberglass until I had a thickness of about 1/2". I sanded it smooth then shot the entire box with gelcoat. I hard blocked it smooth with 80 grit. Shot a second coat of gelcoat then blocked it again with 270 grit paper. For primer, I used PPG K36. It's a urethane based two part primer. Shot a guidecoat and hardblocked it with 400 grit wet paper. Shot the final coat of primer then hardblocked with 600 grit wet paper. Then used PPG DBU basecoat and PPG Concept urethane clear. The finish came out very smooth, I never did have to cut and rub the paint. It took alot of hours to put this thing together and I am real happy with it. If you use the 1"x2" 's and the fleece material, you can make just about custom shape you would like. Give it a shot, the materials to build this kind of stuff really aren't that expensive to get started. Plus, it makes for a really good winter project.

(not intending to steal your thread brainchild) Thanks for posting the info. (I saved it)I'm prob. gonna start with a simple design first (like to build a box that goes behind the legs against the seat). And the left kickpannel pod might be tricky (e-brake) but should be fun to do, regards Doug

Steal away Doug,I am soaking up info A custom fiberglass box sounds good,I'm concidering that very seriously.

I pulled the seat out today, and there is a big space on the right side behind the seat between the gastank, and the cab corner.I don't think a 10 will fit in there, but then again it might if the tank was out,and the box custom made, and slid into place.A tape measure should tell the tale

In the box, it fires down.

i used RodDoor's kick panels and speaker pods and i have the foot E-brake. for this to work i used 5 1/4" speakers and it clears (barely). they also make pillar covers for tweeters but my tweeters are too big so i didn't use them. the tweeters are in the doors. i'll probably keep them there when i get my door panels done but make them hidden. or put them on the outside of the door panels. not sure yet.

Well I just remembered a pair of 8's I swapped for that are laying in the garage.Guess I should hook them up,and see how much boom they make. It's a shame to get old

I measured the distance between the tank, and where the door seal is,and it is around 9 inches, but goes back in there another 6 inches or so.The box would be a litltle small to use a 10.But an 8 might be just the ticket.

10 would be better

i havent installed the setup yet but my friend at school hooked me up. since im moving the gas tank under the bed im going put 1 12's behind my seat. i got a custom box made for a single cab truck like mine. i put 2 12" pioneer premiers. they have a mounting depth of 4" i beleive which is the really cool feature. the rest of my system will be a sony x-plod deck with mp3 and xm radio capabilites and 6 1/2's in the door behind behind the window and door knobs... and 6x9's in the corners or under the seat in custom boxes i had made that i hope work! oh yeah and a offbrand (summit brand) 1000 watt 4 channel amp... just for the subs.... and im putting sound deadening stuff all over the floor and rear of the cab...
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...401920,00.html -more info on subs...
- the subs i bought.
- real close to my box

I have a guy here in Tampa that built me a boxbut the only way to go was JL Audio subs under the seats only 8's though. Just as good as the 10's. A little more $$$ but fit underneath stock bench seat.
