Gasket question:

I am planning to change my air intake from stock to edlebrook performer series. I also want to change the carb to 4 edlebrook 600 4 bbl. I plan to use felpro gasket for the intake. Do I need to use any sealant/adhesive too?

I always run a small bead of silicon around the water ports,and a thick bead under each end,and throw the rubber gaskets away.Those stupid things always leak.

It is also a good idea to take a punch and go along the valley about every 1/4 inch or so where the rubber or cork gaskets would have been before you lay a thick bead of silicone in there.

I only use silicone across the front and the back of the intake vally.. No punching nessacary Gm didnt start beating the blocks with a chisel when they went to silicone across the intake .

I quit putting silicone around the water ports because i never have any leak and when you do put silicone there the gasket slides around

I suggest using some print-o-seal Mr gasket intake gaskets they are very effective on aluminum intakes Althou i have used plan blue fel pro with great results


And get a little awl or screwdriver and make sure the crack where the heads and vally meet are clean .. i spray mine down with B-12 prior to applying silicone and make sure you get a good bead at that point ..

and i put a small dab on the gasket on the corners after i posistion the gasket onto the heads

I suggest using Red High Temp Silicone Its all i ever use and ive never had it blow out or leak .

I used the Fel-Pro gaskets that Edelbrock recommended when I installed mine. As for the Silicone, Permatex has one specifically for gaskets. Be cautious with silicone sealers. Some will cause metals to corrode, over time.
