New sheet metal
Greetings! This is my first post to this forum. I've read some great stuff here!
I have a 1987 GMC Sierra Classic 1/2 4x4 in the body shop at this very moment. I've had her since new and finally gathered enough parts to attempt a restoration. After disassebly, we discovered that the fenders were starting to go bad from the inside (life in the rust belt!). I've tried to source OEM sheet metal, but the fenders have been discontinued (a word very commonly heard at the parts counter when you own old iron!). Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket sheet metal? Any recommendations? Many thanks in advance!

Try www.chevyduty.com or www.lmctruck.com. You should be able to order new fenders there.

you might want to try a new parts man. I know for sure you can still get them for the 73-80 trucks. I would bet 81-87 are still available, but the numbers may have superceded to something else.

for aftermarket stuff, try www.keystone-auto.com . They have a line of parts called "platinum Plus" that generally fit very well. I use Keystone parts here at my shop also.

Jonboy, I just looked at the locator sheet that the dealer faxed me (trying to find them on a dealer shelf!) and wouldn't y'know, there's a little symbol near the part number. The legend tells me that the symbol means "There is supersession information for this part". Perhaps it's time to educate the parts man! The part numbers that they gave me are 15614467 for the LH side and 15634642.
GMCLS1 - I have the LMC catalog in hand! I was wondering what the quality was like. I haven't purchased any sheet metal from them. N2TRUX - Thanks for the welcome! Ebay is wonderful! That's where most of my NOS parts came from. Got 2 OEM doors for $400! Gee whiz, how big is your garage!  ____________________ In my garage (well, they'll be there when I build it!) Go to GMpartsdirect.com and plug in the part numbers. According to them, they have them.

Goodmark fenders were Taiwan about a year ago. They were working on making their own fenders and doors, but not sure how that went. Ask Chris (capt. kaos), he is a dealer for them.

Jonboy - If the part number has been superceeded, how would I find the new number? I looked up the number I have on Partsvoice.com and it didn't show any new numbers. |

I just got the new LMC (fall edition) in today. But i only use it for reference as Chevy Duty and Classic Industries are both much cheaper. ON the sheet metal: From what i hear, reproduction sheet metal tends to run a lighter gauge steel, but that's not always the case. I don't see anything wrong with repro pieces in that unless you thrash your stuff or get into wrecks  then it should be OK.

Sometimes teh A/M sheetmetalis a lighter gauge, and it may or may not fit as well. Of course, these trucks didn't fit together the best, even when new. OEM may not fit really great compared to new vehicles. Of course, the new GM trucks don't fit together really well either. I will check on teh part numbers for your fenders in the morning. I didn't see this thread until my parts guy had gone for the day.
On a side note, I am planning on using OEM fenders (because they have really come down in price) and aftermarket inners, doors, and probably the apron panel as well. The A/M doors are not so bad, especially if you can spray them with something inside or dynomat them (or something similar).

Jonboy- Thanks for checking out those part numbers, I really appreciate it! I agree, they didn't fit together the best to begin with, but I want this truck as perfect as I can get it! I have to replace the bed sides and I'm forced to go with aftermarket on those (discontinued as well), but my body shop says they'll be undetectable as such...we shall see! My ride has served me well since it showed 0 miles on the clock...now she's got 185,000. It holds much sentimental value which is why it's getting the resto!
The local dealer listed the OEM fenders at $299 each! If you can get a better deal than that, I want in on it! I scored some OEM doors on ebay. My body shop uses a product by SEM. It's Internal Panel Coating p/n 39573. I used it on my Suburban. It is supposed to seal the crimped and welded seams at the edges of the panels. So far it's worked well. cliffsta - No thrashing or wrecks (none planned anyway!) here! The only thing this truck hauls is me! It leads a very gentle life! |

I used new GM fenders, doors, and hood on my Blazer. Every part fit with no modifications.
In 14 years, I have never installed an aftermarket body panel that didn't need some fitting to make it right. Find a better parts guy for you dealership parts. Sounds like the one you're using now is a wank.

87sierraclassic...welcome to the board from Minnesota.
Where are you from anyhow? (it isn't in your profile) I would definately go with GM metal wherever possible...you cannot beat the fit and finish IMO. If I were you, I would look for some on E-bay...I too have seen some, and they have been very reasonable in price (compared to new GM parts).

Jonboy - Those are the numbers that I gave earlier in the thread that my dealer says are 'discontinued'. Did your parts guy say that they were discontinued? I found one on a dealer shelf in MA and they want $364.00 for it. Everyone says they are available from GM except my GM dealer! Go figure! |

I'm not sure either. I like to give my local dealer the business, but I may end up going on line to buy. Luckily, the body shop is understanding about the time delays in obtaining quality metal (and tight budgets!) I emailed Goodmark yesterday to ask if their fenders were made overseas and they replied "Yes, if you want American made, the fenders are still available from GM".
I want to know why my dealer is out of the loop on this! |

One source for some NOS parts is Coleman's Surplus just northeast of Harrisburg, PA. They list a bunch of old CUCV parts from rotors to rear ends to engines to hoods. They list the '81-'87 hoods for $79.
I've actually been up there and bought some stuff from them (non-auto). See Coleman's Military Surplus- Millersburg, PA for the auto section. Good luck!

KShortell - I know Coleman's well! I rebuilt my '89 Suburban front axle with stuff from them, which reminds me that I need to get some rotors from them for my '87! I can't visit their store...I'd come back with too much stuff!

My truck has had an easy life compared to most I've seen. The ol' 4.3V6 puffs blue smoke when it starts, but that's the only time, she pulls strong otherwise. I think it's time for valve guide seals...again. Toying with the idea of a 350 swap later on if the body work doesn't break the bank!
You'd think that GM would keep some parts around...I see trucks like ours on the road all the time...there are millions of them still out there!!! Try to find some fender emblems that say "Sierra Classic 1500" for an '87 GMC...that is an exercise in pain a frustration!!! I share the pain of owning old iron with all of my bretheren out there! I just saw a stepside bed complete for $800 on eBay. Probably an aftermarket for that price, but it's new with new wood. Worth a peek? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...sPageName=WDVW I found some used rust-free Texas fenders on eBay...I may go that route rather than aftermarket. My bed looks fine, but when they started grinding, they found those tiny rust holes that are soon to be giant ones. I took a look at the aftermarket bedsides today and they look surprisingly good. I'm going to put new springs in while the bed is off to save myself some pain later on! |

Wow i dont know what the mark up is but i just a month ago checked on some nos fenders for a 80 and they were only 178.00 a piece conway gmc rochester ny
