new motor using oil ?
I have a 383 stroker motor that I rebuilt,new rings, bearings, cam, lifters, valve job etc.. It seems to be using oil, about a quart or more during first 700 miles. It does not smoke or leak and runs fantastic. I changed the oil after about the first 50 miles and since then I have put on about 600 more and have had to add a quart of oil. Where is it going ? I have not driven it much yet while I put the finishing touches on the total resoration. It has a rebuilt Holley 650, Edelbrock intake with headers and flowmasters for exhaust.The exhaust pipe is black like it is running rich but it smells like gas not oil. I am very happy with the way it runs..its a screamer ! just a little concerned on the oil consumption. Oh yeah, I am running Valvoline 30 wt oil. Any ideas ? thanks

It is not out of the ordinary for a "fresh" engine to use oil until the rings get seated in real well. Give it a little time....my guess is it will settle in.

don't really sound....like a problem....everybody's just setting into place...
and the heavy foot....help's slurp up a little oil...... just take it easy on it....untill about 1000 miles or so...... then let'er rip |

Did you just grind the valves, or put in new guides also ? If there is excessive clearance between the valve stem & guide, the engine will use oil, but not smoke unless the guides are real loose. Then it will smoke on start-up after sitting all night. If you hammered it too early..........well...........

hope you're not using synthetic oil,cause rings don't breakin well with synthetic oils

My 383 was sippin a little oil(about a quart per 1000 mi). The 1 st 12-1500 miles were pretty easy....still sippin oil. I took the old longhorn out on the hyway, & cranked her up to around 6600 on those 4.10 gears(all out of speedo!).....then let the throttle up & backed her down hard! I looked up in the rearveiw, to see the biggest freakin cloud of blue smoke.....since then, I have not added any oil tween changes
 I have "seated in" several engines over the yrs, & have seen some never use any oil, but others need a few miles. Dont sweat it yet.....give her a few more miles, then drop that HAMMER!  crazyL

Thanks for the responses, I took it pretty easy for the first 100-200 miles ,but it is hard to keep my foot out of it. I have my rev limiter set at 5000 rpm's so I know I have'nt gone higher than that. Love that stroker
