fuel cell in bed? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Going to look for newer style bench seat tomorrow, if i find one i was thinking about installing it without the tank in and put fuel cell in the bed . This truck is my dads i am fixing up for him and it will be headed for texas in december.
Anyways I was worried about the heat down there an the cell in the bed getting alot of sun? Any pics out there? maybe a cover over it ? or?

alot of people are putting them in those tool boxes(the ones that go from side to side of the bed ) around here !! but i dont know how well they will do in the heat of texas

I see quite a few farmers and ranchers around here with a large tank in the bed. Therefore, I assume the heat is not an issue. You may want to check with the manufacturer.

Personally, I would not go with a plastic fuel cell. I have seen numerous plastic truck boxes in my neck of the woods (Phoenix) that are sagging from heat and sun exposure. I have also seen those poly fuel cells deteriorate quickly in this country also. Check out a boardmembers site at www.aluminumfuelcell.com .

The sun on top is no worse than the heat from the black asphaut(?) from the road.

It should have a vent to keep the pressure from building inside the tank. I think it would do just fine in the bed.

I don't think it is so much the heat as possibly uv rays from the sun that might cause a problem. Don't know for sure, though.

Ive got a 19 gallon aluminum fuel cell in the bed of my 72. On a really hot day i could see fumes coming out The vent but other than that no kaboom

maybe some sort of cover over it to make it look better and keep sun off of it. any pictures of your fuel cell?

I have a sweet, 30g in-bed aluminum fuel cell built by boardmember fuelcellguy that I'm going to be selling next week. I'm in the process of moving to Austin from Dallas, so I should have pics of it and post it on the parts board next week.
