Hood removal
Getting ready to pull my 307 so I can paint the engine compartment and drop a fresh 350 in. I will be doing this by myself and wondered how necessary it is to remove the hood? Also, can I just leave the 3 speed set on blocks or will it be easier to put the new engine in with the tranny out? Will have help with the install.

it really alot easier to do without the hood . i tie the front of the hood to the engine hoist then remove the hinge bolts and move the hood out of the way

leave the tranny it's far easyer than trying to pull it out the engine compartment. make sure you use a jack insead of blocks to hold it up since the truck will rise slightly when you remove the engine. using a jack will also help when you go to reatach the engine to the tranny. also save yourself the migrane and just remove the hood. you will need 2 people for this and an air rachet makes it much easier.

Thanks for the advice. I talked my son into helping me and removing the hood was a lot easier. Didn't see any reason I couldn't have left the tranny attached to the engine. Would have saved some time. I may put it back in that way.

It is easier to drop engine and tranny in together,the pain is trying to get it all slid together in the floor before dropping it in.Of course I work alone 90% of the time,so with another person it may not be bad

IMO, there is so much room between the engine and firewall that there is no reason to pull the tranny with the motor. That is just that much more weight to cave in a fender, or worse, your windshield.

I removed a hood by myself already but what I did was bunch up some rags at both corners at the rear of the hood, then removed all the bolts. The hood will set down on the rags and do no damage to anything, then set down the ratchet and get ahold of that hood and remove!
Just watch that windshield!!!

Might consider removing the front clip to paint. It's what I did and it came out lookin good!

I pulled the I6 and powerglide from my '67 with no problems.
I would remove the hood and use a 'load leveler' like Mike posted for sure. One tip when removing the hood, mark the location of the hinge support on each side. This will save you alot of time when you re-install the hood for alignment purposes

You might want to "mark" the hinge bracket to hood so the reinstall goes a lot easier.
