Dumb Question

This is a very dumb question...and I am sorry. I was afraid to even ask, but I know if I don't ask, I will never know.

What is the difference between a long block motor and a short block.

There is a guy locally with a 2004R that I can get for 50 bucks...needs rebuild
and a guy with a 327 "longblock" for $250....Which means I would have rnning gear for 300 buckaroonies...

but when it says longblock...what exactly does that mean...I suppose that anything can be "fabbed" to fit...but I just don't know. <shrug>

Don't laugh too hard when you read my question...be easy on me

Hey we all have to learn-the best way to learn is to ask questions and then try it yourself.
1--shortblock= engine block with crank, rods, pistons, cam, timing gears and timing chain
2--longblock=all of the above with the addition of the heads along with the valve train which includes rocker arms, pushrods and lifters.
To finish engine you would need the following--intake manifold, carb. dist.,waterpump, starter, flexplate, fuel pump, plugs and plug wires, exhaust manifolds valve covers(if not included with longblock) and a bunch of bolts and small items.
As you can see you will need a lot of stuff to finish either of the short or long block. Unless you have these on hand your best bet is to buy a complete engine which will have everything you need plus all brackets, pulleys etc.
