new style motor mounts?

someone else probably asked this but do new motor mounts fit on our trucks. I have a 68 frame and 74 crossmember so can I put the newer style mounts on.

i tryed a set off of an 85 suburban. they fit but only sort of. i need to measure the distances between the top holes and between the bottom holes with them mounted on the 85 frame then mount them to the 67-72 frame using the numbers. even then you may want to slap an engine and tranny together and set it in the frame to make sure the engine is set at reasonable angle.

p.s. please let me know if you come up with a solution.
thanks,

I am in the middle of this swap. I have a 70 Chev with a 1980 cradle. From what I remember, the frame on the 70 is a 1/2" shorter in height than the 1980. I'll need to put a spacer between the mount and frame to get things evened out.

I'm in school again and I probably won't get back to the project until next summer.

It worked out good for me I have seen some that had lugnuts as spacers I dont know if there are different hieghts or if whomever did the truck i seen used the bottom bolt holes and made new ones for the top.

I know one thing Its alot easier to get motor mounts in poly or solid config rather than a 67-72 type mount.

hey all,
well i'm bringing this old thread up hoping that someone can help me out here. i am currently doing this swap and i ran into a problem.

i mounted my brackets like 1972c10 did by bolting the frame brackets to the top rail and drilling the crossmember. this part went well and looks awsome but when i tried to test fit my sb350 and trans i found that the engine was sitting wayyy too high. the engine mounts are about 2 inches too high. i'm thinking that i need to change the brackets that are bolted to the engine to car mounts instead of trck mounts as they currently are. if you have done this swap and can tell me what you used i would really aprecheate it.

thanks,
ondrew
p.s. i am taking pictures so i can make an faq on this topic when i get done.

There is a difference between car clamshells and truck clamshells. I found that out the hard way after years of piling the clamshells up i used a pair found out they were different after that i write on them what they came off of.

Are both your bolt holes lining up? Because mine woudlnt line up with the wrong clamshell on it.

Also there are two sets of boltholes that you can bolt the motor mount to. The stands i put in had the mounts on the bottom holes.

none of the holes are lining up. the engine is siting 2 inches 2 high. the top of the engine mounts are actuly allmost even with the top of the frame rails. this is with truck clamshells. the only thing i can possably think of is maybe it's a set of van clamshells but as far as i know they should be the same.
thanks for your help so far,
ondrew

thanks it would be aprecheated. even a part number off of one of the installed clamshells would suffice. i can take the number over to the chevy dealer and find out what it's off of.
thank you,

Anyone had any trouble with motor mounts letting go? On 67' Chevelles they issued a recall because the factory motor mounts would break or crack. This caused the motor to fall, pinning the throttle. I believe this may have only been for smallblock (non-SS) cars.

These trucks were recalled too. The 'fix' was a cable wrapped around the dvr's exhaust manifold, and down to the upper a-arm. Some dealers actually made brackets, but most of the ones I've seen were just looped around the manifold.

Yep. Pretty much the fix on the Chevelles too. My brother owns a 67 Chevelle and has had the mounts give on him before. Pretty scary. When we were working on my truck he noticed the mounts arn't much better for the trucks than the cars.

Thanks

The stock mounts were a big problem on these old trucks, as well as the mid 60's cars. the aftermarket replacement mounts arent bad tho.....I am on my 4th season with the mounts on my 383, & still going. That thing has had the clutch dumped @ 5000 rpms a few times, as well as hammering all those gears! I do plan an upgrade to urathane, but as long as what I have "works", I cant afford the replacement cost crazyL

I Made some Solid Mounts to stop mine from flexing I never could find a source for Urethane or solid .. But then again this was 5 years ago . Whats Urethane Motor Mounts for a 67-72 Going for nowadays?

Thats one of the reason i converted that 68 of mine to later style mounts Plus being easier to line up the solid and poly mounts are cheaper than 67-72

well i think i finaly figured it out. the engine mount to frame brackets i was using were off an 85. today i finaly got to look at a 76 and an 85 next to each other and i noticed that the frame brackets are drasticly different. i personaly beleive that this was because of the exaust manafolds but anyway the [73-80?] brackets make the engine sit aprox 2in higher that the [80?-87] brackets do. this accounts for the 2 inches i was having a problem with and will hopefully fix the problem. i'll find out whan i get the brackets in the comming week. my only hope is i don't have to modify anything.

from what i have expeirenced no. this may be different if you use spacers on top of the frame between frame and the bracket but i haven't tryed it and personaly i think it would look tackie.

Are you sure you dont have Big Block 73-87 mounts? There is a difference and big block towers would need the spacers
