Fuel Gauge

I have an '89 Suburban. When the tank is about 1/2 full, the fuel gauge 'wigs out' bouncing between 1/2 and Full. I'm suspecting the gauge is bad. My 1/2 ton pickup did the same thing until I tightened the connector behind the instrument cluster, but the same fix didn't work on the 'burb!

Anyone seen this behavior before?

I have never messed around with fuel gauges much, but it sounds to me like the sending unit in the tank.

generally, feul gauge probelms are the sending unit. My gauges is top-sided; drops real slowly when full, then falls off past halfway on the gauge and goes past F and E. Pretty much its a sending unit problem, as its the weak link in the whole system i guess.

Defiantely sounds like a fuel sender like others mentioned. While you're there you might want to invest in aa completely new tank and sending unit if you're tank is old or rusting. Also incluse with that new straps and rubber lines.

Believe it or not, the underside of this truck looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. I can read the part number stamped on the frame. No rust at all as it came from your neck of the woods (somewhere in TX). The tank is mint as are the straps, so I'm not too worried about that. If I drop the tank, I'll replace everything while I'm there! It's not worth it not to!
