more gas gauge woes
i cannot seem to figure out what is wrong with my gas gauge, i have checked all the grounds on the dash and i have traced the wire from the sender to the fuse block and my needle is points straight down when i unplug the wire and when i plug it in it points to the end of the the first semi cirle thing like it has a full tank but in the wrong position if you catch my drift, i am in really bad need of this as i have to make a fairly long trip in the truck soon and dont want to be doing any walking at all.

I made if from Tx to Ohio and back with no guage...and no speedo. I had to keep track of miles from the mile markers.
If your guage is pointing at the 6 o'clock position...then I'm thinkin your guage is toast...or the needle has been removed and re-installed wrong. |

Not a chance it used to have dual tanks, and one has been removed, but the switch still installed is there?
That's what was wrong with our wrecker.

It shouldn't be a gauge problem.
I gave him a known working gas guage yesterday. I took the gauge out of the old instrument cluster from my 70. It worked right when pulled. Jake, is it doing the exact same thing with the new gauge as the old guage?

This may not be any use but while wee were looking into changing the sending unit on my 69 (inconsistant readings) we noticed the pick-up line was not secure in the mounting plate (I think this grounds the sending unit) took it out and spot welded the tube to the plate readings were fine (until I broke it loose again)
Hope it helps, and good luck

Just pack a yardstick and a 3gal can of gas and you'll all set. That way you won't have any gauges distracting you while you drive.

My Suburban has the 3:00 gas gauge, & it gets right at 300 miles per tank of gas, so I try to remember to fill up every time it turns over an even 200 miles. And there's a 2.5gal. jerry can of gas in the back 'cause sometimes I forget.

The ol gas can in the bed works, but friday I was in the middle of a hiway,2 lanes, and no shoulder to pull over on pouring gas in while speeding semis flew around me It's a little nerve wrecking.A working gauge is better
