Tie Rods
listen i put everything back on my 64 and when i got ready to put the inner and outer tie rods the outer fit but the inner won't go into the 64 center link . do i need to get the center link fron the 85 c/10 ? and on the spindle there is a piece of metal that keeps the spindle from turning all the way ,should i cut it off or take the peice off the lower a arm .

You did not explain your setup but I'm guessing from your question you might have put 85 spildles on a 64? If so I hope you used 85 ball joints and it sounds like you are trying to use 85 tie rods? If you have 85 spindles you need 85 outers and 64 inners plus an adaptor sleeve to attach the two together. On the steering stop you can grind the spindle stop down.

thanks
thanks for the quick reply ,you were right i put the spindles ,tie rods, ball joints, from a 1985 c/10 and i have every thing back on except the inner tie rods are too big to go into the center link ,you are right i figured i need a special adjusting sleeve ,but i have been to a number of places and they look at me like i'm crazy when i tell them about a sleeve to connect 85 to 64 . you also anwsered my other question about the steering stop . where can i get the adjuster sleeve .

I am not sure about that but I believe it will. I know you can swap in later model steering boxes with pitman arm (3½ turnsLL vs 4½) so I don't see why the reverse wouldn't work.

I got a set of the custom sleeves from CPP and they worked great. 68 inner 75 outer tierods. The 68's are smaller in diameter.

get the tie rod sleve adapters. i got mine from performance online.
i also removed my "piece of metal" (steering lock / bumpstop) from my lower control arms. i used a air chisel and it worked great. i have seen others use a cut off wheel but it took him hours and several wheels. another guy used a torch and cut through is arm by mistake.

Anybody have problems using those custom sleeves? My tie rods have a different thread pattern than those sleeves. Did I get the wrong tie rod ends?

I had the same problem. All it took was a 18 pitch tap and die to clean the threads up and all was well. It seems that they didnt run a finishing tap down the holes. Hope this works for you.

I actually just got back from NAPA. There are various thread patterns for those inner tie rods.

Use 67 to 70 inner tie rods on the outer You may need a diffirent center link depending on how big the holes are in the link you have. Classic Performance Products sells the Adapter to use 73 up outer tie rods with the 67-70 outer tie rod for use as inner tie rods. Kind confusing.
Good Luck, Mario

OK so let me get this straight. I have the custom adjusting sleeve from CPP. I have outer tie rods from '84 donor truck. there is no problem threading the outer '84 tie rods into the sleeve. the problem is I bough inner '70 tie rods to use as new inners. Do I need to use outer '70 tie rods as inner tie rods for this conversion? Is my '70 center link going to work?

The problem you are going to have is that the 70 inners will not work as inners you need to use 67-70 outers as inners. Your center link "Should" work you will not know till you get the 67-70 outers and try them in the center link hole. There were 2 diffirent center links in use so it's a 50/50 that you may need to find a another one from a 64- 72 with the smal holes. later, Mario

It worked! '70 outers as inners, '84 outers as outers and the CPP adjusting sleeve.
