Volkswagen question
Does anyone know what numbers to read on a Volkswagen flat four block? I am trying to find out what year it is and whatever else the casting numbers will tell me, but i dont know which number to read.
ps sorry for asking about a VW, but you guys are the most knowledgeable mechanics i know. thanks

The numbers are right under the generator stand. There is a spot there where the stand joins the main block.

I'm moving this off of 67-72 section.
The numbers are below the generator/ alternator stand. Not the 1-4-3-2 number, the other one. Most likely, the number is useless. Pretty much all VWs have had new cases by now. Almost all cases still on the road today are service replacement cases used during a rebuild. If anybody needs one, I have a 74x94 stroker VW engine in my shop with 200 miles on it. That's a 2054cc engine by the way.

I apoligize for posting this on here but i just aquired a block and I am trying to find out what year and type it is.
Again i am sorry for posting it here but i couldnt seem to find a vw board i liked. thank you for the replies and if anyone knows who can check these numbers out for me i would appreciate it.

If you have a VW, check out John Muir's book "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" (AKA the "idiot book"). There are several printings, & the older ones don't cover the 411/412 series cars, but they have more info about the older cars (beetles, buses, etc.) that is left out of the newer books. Look on the cover above the title to see which cars are covered. #'s dont really mean anything. the jugs could have been replaced with a bigger (or smaller if someone was doing a "cheap" rebuild) jugs. crank could have been changed too. #'s would tell you what it originally came out of thats it.
