Thinking About AirBags For Rear Anyone Else Got Them?

I have been thinking about making some bracketry and putting two Bags on the bag of my 85 C20 I would more than likely just run 1/4 line with Schrader Valves

No Need in having a compressor and valves Since i wont be hitting Front Back and Side To Side,,, Just helpers

Anyone have them .. Yes i know they make a kit I know it can be done cheaper with a litlte bit of fabriaction.

I was thinking of using Firestone Bags I Dont know alot about that stuff but i have a friend thats all about it . I just wanted to get opinions on people who have them and how much it helped on the Hauling/Sqautting

A guy I know got a set installed on his Ford half ton, he just puts some pressure in when he is going to be hauling his big ol' trailer with the quad in the back, it rides really well, and doesn't squat at all when they are pressurized

I have had them on two of my daily drivers. It's real simple, they work. You can fab the brackets, but they are pretty cheap to buy. All you need is a small set of bags.

Just remember when you set them up that they can't touch "anything" or they will rub a hole in them. It's recommended to keep a small amount of air in them all the time to prevent internal chaffing....

Wonder if i could put Some Gold Bond In the bellows to prevent chaffiing? I would assume they would help the ride if they had a little air in them ? It rides like a tank now .. If only i could get it to ride like a covered wagon

What you may consider doing is adding the bags and removing a leaf or two from your rear springs, thats the only way it will help the ride, just adding the bags won't soften your ride any, but, removing leaves and since you have the bags to back up the leaves should soften your ride up some.

I have the Firestone Ride-Rite air springs on my '81 C20. I can put nearly any load, including a 12,000 lb 5th wheel trailer, and add enough air to the bring the truck back to level. I really only need the air bags when towing trailers. My stock 3/4 ton springs are kind of soft, so I needed the extra support. When towing my 29' 8500 lb 5th-wheel, I only need about 25 psi of air in the bags to level it back out.

Adding these kind of air bags will not help the ride when empty. In fact, if you add more than 10 psi of air, it makes the ride worse because you're actually stiffening the suspension. I try to keep 10 psi in them when empty, so that the bags don't get holes internally, as stated. I've had these air bags on my truck since 1996, and I've never had a problem with them.

I like my air bags because I can adjust the rear suspension up and down for varying loads, and then put it back to stock for regular driving. I also have an on-board air compressor and a guage in the cab so that I can add/remove air without getting out of the truck.

Casey
