A/C Retrofitting...

Anyone ever take an a/c unit out of another vehicle and retrofit it to one of our cabs? A while ago I remember seeing something similar in a magazine where they used a unit from some chrysler product, like an omni or something. I don't really care for the bulky stock a/c setup and my truck didn't come with a/c anyway. Just looking at other options/ideas, other than vintage air and the likes.

While I have not done it in one of our trucks, I have taken the A/C, air handler, and heater box out of a 95 Hyundai Elantra and put it into my '67 mustang. This set up would not be ideal for a truck because of the large heater box which is designed to be on the floor. My suggestion is to root around the local bone-yard and see what will work.

I have seen several trucks fitted with aftermarket A/C in junkyards. The ones I have seen put everything up under the dash. The downside is that you lose a little bit of the glove compartment space. They have about one third of the glove compartment removed to clear the A/C unit.

One of these systems might work for you, and would involve less fabrication.

I used the entire Tahoe heater and a/c in my truck, but i dont think it would me possible using the stock dash. I pretty much had to use it to make it all work.

Thanks for the responses. This has been bothering me for a while and I just haven't gotten to it yet. Plan on starting the interior and body work in the spring. I saw it in an older magazine before most started using vintage air, etc. Finding that exact article in my stash will be a winter project all by itself. I had a unit from an 87 (old style) that someone dropped and cracked while we were moving. It wound up getting chucked on a dump run. Now I'm just looking into something smaller to fit under the dash. Seen the real older style under dash types, but those are a little bulky too, with a bench and 4 spd. I'm not too worried about the glove compartment. I can fabricate another box to shrink it. Guess I'll have to look at some mid 80s to mid 90s front wheel drive products. Was thinking about the park aves, bonnevilles, luminas, etc. I'll just have to measure up the area under the dash and hit the junkyards. Thanks again.
