Heater core R & R...
Well, being that it is starting to get cold in many parts... I thought I'd dig up Jewels's post from last year and copy it in the FAQ area.
I'm sure SOMEONE is looking for this info. |

Man, what a bit** of a job! Has anybody just taken a cutting wheel to the outside of the box and made a clean cover plate instead of the monster job described in the FAQ? Seems like I did a heater core replacement on a big 72 Mercury one time that had a 4 screw cover plate which made the job a 15 minute one. I never forgot that and was wondering if anybody just modified theirs on the Chevy pickup.... H

If you think these heater cores are hard, then you need to try a newer vehicle....doesn't even have to be brand new.
My sister's Jetta is in the back yard with the entire console and dashboard in the trunk, and I still haven't been able to get the stupid heater core out. This is a way simple job on one of these trucks. |

I worked for this one garage. We had an 86 Tbird come in for a heater core. The book that they price jobs by pays something like 12 hours to replace it. You have to totally remove the dash to get to a few screws. Half way through the job the boss turned into a real ah@le so I quit...

I work for a chrysler/dodge/jeep dealer. I recently put a heater FAN in a 2004 dodge caravan. I had to remove the entire dash assembly. And then remove the box to replace the fan motor. Not fun.

Must be the season - My heater core blew on my way to work this morning. Made for a frightful but funny afterwards day. Sun was barely up, and all of sudden what I thought was smoke came pouring out of the defrost vents.... I thought my engine was on fire, I didn't have a fire extinguisher with me and I knew there was a gas station up the road about a mile that would have one so I floored it - came barreling into the gas station threw the hood open and was like WTF - no fire. Guess it was the mixture of cool air and hot water. Anyway the people at the gas station probably thought I was nuts. Got the core after work and installed it. Was a pain in the arss for me but then I haven't had do a new vehicle yet.

lol - I know how it sounds. I pulled up to the store area which a good distance from the pumps.. Besides isn't that what insurance is for - to make a millionaire out of the store owners if I blew up their 90 year old two pump store?

I found it's fairly simple to just remove all the screws you can, then reach between housing and the firewall from above with a hacksaw blade and cut through the last screw. It's a cinch. No need to replace it, even if you could.
