i bought some kicker 3.5's. They did the same thing. Ending up selling them to a friend of mine for about 10 bucks more than what i bought them for.

I placed the dash on and mine are too high also. I'll probably just screw around with them, so they can be mounted from under the dash in the spring. For now I'll live without the dash pad a little longer.

to mount any "respectable" speakers in the dash will require some level of modification. Grab some snips and have at it.

or spring for some 2" or 1" tweeters and get the stock speaker bracket tripods thingies from 81 up. But you gotta remember to run a high pass filter or crossover to them so they aren't farting out bass, just treble.

Like cliffsta said, I also used a set of filters too and they made a big difference.

They dont have as much surface to sit on as the stock bracket But i think it will be supported enough.

With my 80 dash i think i might mount a couple 1 inch tweeters where the factory speakers from 81 up went to add better atmosphere.

Hmm, i'm about to install a set of 3.5s in my dash, but I was looking at Infinity Reference speakers, if I can find some flush mount speakers I think it will fit, or I will just cut a small hole in the dash pad, mine is already falling apart anyway.

Heres what you need to install the aftermarket speakers...
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HhMjDj2...3000&s=0&cc=01 if you buy your speakers from crutchfield they come with the speakers for free. I'm gonna pickup a set of the JBL GTO 3.5" speakers I think.

Or you could screw them to the dash and not get gouged by crutchfield.

I prefer to spend a little extra and not have to drill holes where they aren't supposed to be, I really hate drilling holes in stuff, I always end up regretting it. Probably nobody is ever gonna know, but I know and I hate extra holes, my bed rails already have enough of them.
And I was planning on buying the speakers from them, if you buy the speakers the brackets are included for free. I bought my new Sony CDX-F7700 head unit off ebay, great deal, brand new too. Just won the bid on a dual 12" sub box too, I already have the subs I traded my 10" bazooka tube that was in my beetle for his dual 12" subs in a box, but its a huge giant square box. I'm going to be using a MTX RT202 2 channel amp for the 12's, 100 watts rms per channel, I know its not much, but should get the job done.

Im not real big on drilling holes either But in a spot like that far worse could be done and never known.
Friend of mine said a coworker of his put some 5 1/4s in the dash a few weekends ago ... he acted like they fit right in without cutting it. |

I have pioneer 3.5 and don't have a problem. I do have to say about Crutchfield that I bought a deck and speaker set and got a great deal on it plus brackets, wiring harnesses, and a bunch of other crap for free. One thing at a time and they aren't the cheapest.
